First Communion Banners
Hand-made First Communion banners are a popular tradition in many parishes. They are hung at the end of the pews on the day of your First Holy Communion.
Host & Chalice
At the Last Supper when Jesus instituted the Eucharist, He changed bread and wine into His Body and Blood. At every Mass we also have the bread and wine, changed into Jesus' Body and Blood.
We place the symbol of the Host to remind us of the Body of Christ and we also have a symbol of a chalice to remind us of the Blood of Christ
Cross
The Death and Resurrection of Jesus and how he gave his life for us so that we could go to Heaven. The Cross is a symbol of Jesus's great love for us.
Your Name
- Jesus loves you so much that he wants to give himself totally to you- Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity.
- He wants to come into your heart and have close relationship with you. You are his child and his special creation, and he has had a plan for you and loved you from the beginning of the world!
- You put your name on your banner because God knows every one of us by name! He wants you to stay close to him always, and the Eucharist is an important way we are able to have such a close union with him.
Grapes & Bread
- During Mass the priest will take hosts made from ordinary bread and wine made from ordinary grapes, just like Jesus had at the Last Supper. He will say the same words that Jesus said and turn the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ.
- We put bread and grapes on your banner to show how Christ can take something ordinary and make it such an amazing gift that we receive in the Eucharist.
Dove
- One of the most common symbols of the Holy Spirit is a dove. It comes from the story of Jesus’ baptism, when Jesus saw “the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him.” (Mark 1:10)
- Even though we cannot see the Holy Spirit, he is present around us just like the wind. And, just like the wind pushes a leaf through the air, the Holy Spirit guides us through life.
- We put doves on your banner to remind you that the Holy Spirit will always be with you
Hearts
- Is a symbol of both the divine and human love that Jesus has for his Father and for us.
- "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life." John 3:16
