"Be yourself. No one else is qualified." - Unknown
With Appreciation:
- Bravo to Karen - we are 100% compliant with our children's immunizations in all grades. We appreciate how she is working diligently to keep us all safe!
- Big thanks to Aly - she applied for a Medi-Cal grant and was successful. Thanks to her, we'll be getting a projector for our conference room, which will allow us to facilitate more parent involvement in IEPs, SSTs, and 504 meetings, and it will allow grade levels to work more collaboratively during release time!
- I can't thank our entire team enough - this past week went really well, all things told, but it was also stressful for every person on our team. Each of us were impacted by the extra early release schedule, conferences, Apex, and the extra early lunch schedule. I appreciate how everyone was helpful, flexible, and willing to do his/her best given the situation!
New Information/Things to Do:
- the drive begins this Monday and runs through December 6
- classes are encouraged to decorate their boxes and fill them with non- perishable foods
- all food collected will stay in the Lincoln community
- boxes will be emptied on Fridays - Pam will be in touch with the details on emptying boxes; let Pam know if your box needs to be emptied on a non-Friday because it's so full! :)
- each class needs to keep track of your own collection totals
- the class with the highest collection total will earn a pizza party!
- our leadership ambassadors will be helping to spread the word & generate enthusiasm
Last Call - Google Summit:
Looking for inspiration? There is a Ed Tech Team Google Summit being hosted at Roseville HS on 1/13 and 1/14 (from about 8-4). If you are interested in going, let Jen know by Wednesday so I can secure early bird pricing. I'd love to take a team of 5 staff...we have at least 2 staff on board already!
- Please be sure your students put any tickets they've earned into a bucket
- We'll ask every staff member to pull 2 tickets on Thursday, 11/9 in the morning
- Winning ticket holders will be invited to the red tables at 2:30 on Friday to enjoy a special treat!
Focus on Quality Questioning in November
In November, we continue to strive towards our October goal, but the twist is to add quality questioning strategies to your lessons.
Examples would include questions that encourage students to reflect back on your objective, that reflect deeper thinking that recall (remember DOK?), and that encourage children to support their responses with evidence.
Here are some resources that may be helpful:
- Research around great questioning strategies - click here
- 20+ new ways you can incorporate effective wait time and questioning techniques - click here
- Video that shows questioning (it's a HS classroom, but the ideas are generalized to all grades) - click here
- A video showing 'second set partners' in action to teach listening, paraphrasing and to make meaning of a topic - click here
- Article about how to prepare well crafted questions and how to handle different types of responses - click here
Keep in mind, we are looking for PROGRESS, not perfection!
PBIS Corner
NEW - GIVE OUT COLT PRIDE TICKETS LIKE CRAZY!
- week of 11/6-11/9 - give tickets when children line up and move around campus with their hands to themselves (especially when lined up for a period of time - like in the morning and after recess)
- week of 11/15-17 and 11/27-12/1 - give students tickets who are on their own or with a buddy and who you see walking (i.e. walking to the bathroom, to the office, to run an errand, etc...)
NEW GAME to PLAY!
One way to ensure children make the best choices on the playground is to ensure they are engaged. To that end, this month, please make it a priority to teach your children the game "Steal the Bacon" ... click for a video of instructions and modeling. Here is a set of written instructions with accommodations for younger and older players.
PBIS UPDATE:
In September, there were 142 referrals written for 56 students by 23 staff members. Since our 10/3 staff meeting, there have been 74 total referrals written for 34 students by 25 staff. 39/74 have been on the playground and 33/39 were written for students making poor choices to get peer attention.
What do teachers need to do? This week, continue to provide explicit instruction and reminders about appropriate playground play. Most playground referrals are for minor contact and disrespect and students are seeking peer attention. Teach your children how to ask if they can play and consider introducing some of your PE games at recess! Remember to use our powerpoint and videos as a teaching tool.
Interested in being a master teacher?
____________________________________________________________________________________________
Placements are typically between 7-8 weeks long, but could be as long as 15-16 weeks long. Both schools offer a stipend to the LCE master teacher (Jessup offers $400 at the conclusion of an 8 week placement; Phoenix offers $30/week of placement), as well as a supervisor who helps provide support for the LCE master teacher and the student teacher throughout the process. Both schools are looking to put a student teacher at LCE from January-May.
Each classroom that a student teaching candidate is placed in must have an EL and a special needs student so our candidates can demonstrate proficiency teaching to all students. You may remember your time as a student teacher...he/she will be working on TPAs and projects, including video taping a lesson. Master teachers must have at least 3 years of teaching experience, and should be someone who wants to help a new teacher learn and grow - typically actively including him/her in planning, PLC meetings, SSTs/IEPs, and campus activities.
Upcoming Meetings/Activities:
Where are Jen & Will the week of 11/6?
- Will is off site at a training for part of the week; check the in/out by Tricia's desk to see if he's here!
- Jen is on campus all week, but will be in IEPs/SSTs most of the day on Thursday
- staff from the PCOE PBIS team will be on site on Monday morning
- Skip Langdon will be on site Tuesday morning for walk throughs

- How a gratitude journal can inspire positive change (and hit some ELA standards, too!)
