Heritage Week is Here!
Our big week is finally here. This is a time to celebrate all things Landstown. What does it mean to be a contributing member at this great school? What legacy will you leave at the Nest? How can you make an impact every day? How will you carry on this legacy building once you have left LHS? These are all great thought-provoking questions for our students this week.
Thanks to Kasi Daniel for her leadership with our display boards and to the various groups who participated in this fun activity! Everyone did a fantastic job with their representations of our "Leaving a Legacy" theme.
The Heritage Week Committee has arranged for speakers from the community to be with us Tuesday through Thursday during every block. We are thrilled to report that with the exception of a few changes in requests because of limited space in the Schola, all requests were able to be accommodated. (There were, however, three Google form submissions that did not have a teacher name which meant we could not make reservations for these requests.) All confirmation tickets and seating charts have been placed in mailboxes.
Family Game Night will be held on Wednesday evening. We hope you and your family will be able to join us. If you plan to attend, please fill out the rsvp form here so we are sure to order enough pizza!
The culmination of this wonderful week will be our motivational speaker--Mike Smith--on Friday. His presentation will be full of energy and a great message. It's going to be a phenomenal experience for students and staff alike. Enjoy!
Advisory on Wednesday
This week’s Advisory, which will take place on Wednesday, November 14, will focus on and celebrate LHS Heritage Week! Unlike our last Advisory, there are no tasks for students to complete in Schoology, so they will not need their Chromebooks this time. Teacher notes, including links to everything you need for the lesson, have been placed in Schoology in the LHS Advisory Group. Remember, once in the group, click Resources to access the grade level folders and then the November 14 folder. Since students do not need access to anything in Schoology this time, you DO NOT NEED to copy this week’s folder into your own Advisory course; instead, you can simply access the Teacher Notes from within the LHS Advisory group. After you have reviewed the lesson, get in touch with Kelly or Krissy if you have questions prior to Advisory day.
An added bonus for advisory will be in the form of special Heritage Week wristbands. These wristbands have been counted out for advisory sections and will be in your mailboxes on Tuesday afternoon. Please remember to distribute a Heritage Week wristband to all students in your advisory. You can return any extras to Kelly Singer or Krissy Sanderlin.
Heritage Week Service Project
For our Heritage Week service project this year we will be collecting hats, scarves, gloves, socks, and toiletries for distribution in our local community. Items will be donated through 1A classes from November 5 through November 30. The class with the most donations will win breakfast on 12/4!
I Make a Difference
From Dana Zumbrum
It’s an honor to pass this week “I make a difference award” to Angela Henry. Angela has strong a meaningful relationship with her students. Dedicating time outside of the classroom for auditions, performances, practices, and competitions, to see her students succeeded. Her love and passion for music is contagious. She has been there for me personal and professional. I know the students and I look forward to her smile and funny remarks everyday. Angela exceeds in all aspects of teaching and leading her department. Angela, thank you for making a difference in our lives everyday.
Federal Cards
Block 1A teachers: If you have received all of your students' federal cards completed correctly, please return your federal cards (in alphabetical order), completed E1 form, and class roster (with any discrepancies between your E1 form and the roster noted on your roster) to Julia Mitchell in the main office. If you not have not received all of your students' federal cards, continue to call parents to remind them to complete and return their student's federal card. On Friday, November 16th, please turn in all of the federal cards you have received. If there is missing or incomplete information on your students' federal cards after you submit them to Julia Mitchell, you will be contacted by Ms. Chambers or Mrs. Mitchell and asked to communicate any federal card errors to your students' parents. Please double check your federal cards and E1 form before submitting them. Thank you for all of your help! It is sincerely appreciated.

Calendar Shift
Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) will use February 18 (Presidents’ Day) to make up instructional time lost during Hurricane Michael. Given the length of time out of school thus far, the division will also extend the first semester from Monday, January 28 to Thursday, January 31. Consequently, the division’s previously scheduled staff day/virtual learning day will now be Friday, February 1 and the second semester will begin Monday, February 4.
Report cards for the second nine weeks/first semester will be sent home Monday, February 11.
The 2018-2019 school calendar has been updated to include the makeup day and semester changes. The updated calendar is available on www.vbschools.com. Updated 2018-19 Calendar
Announcements & Reminders
School Store: Come check out the new arrivals in our school store. The store is offering a 10% for faculty and staff during Heritage Week. Come check out the great apparel.
Open Gym on Wednesdays: If you are willing to help out with open gym on Wednesdays, please let Dr. Askew know by this Friday (11/16). Thanks to Fran Schoenig, Tim Blum, and Monica Lukas who have already volunteered. We would like to be able to split this activity into first half/second half so we're looking for at least one more person.
PL Opportunity: Do you have an idea for a PL session you would like to share with your colleagues here at LHS? With so much great talent here at LHS, we would love to have our own staff lead some of our sessions. If you are interested, please let Kelly Singer know.
Student Passwords: Teachers have the ability to change student passwords. There is a quick link in our "Staff Bookmarks" for easy access. If you go to the Staff Bookmarks at the tops left of the LHS home page, "Change STUDENT passwords" appears in the drop down menu.
Kudos
Congratulations to our Scholastic Bowl team for their win over Green Run last week. Final score: LHS 395 GRHS 230!
Congratulations to our football team for their win over Woodside in the regional quarterfinal game. They travel to Oscar Smith this Friday for the semi-final game.
Congratulations to Dasha Cary who has been selected as the citywide PTA high school winner of the Principles of American Citizenship for the month of October.
Kudos and thanks to Angela Tonnesen who helped set up the gymnastics equipment after school one day last week. As a former coach, Angela knows where the equipment needs to be placed and how to set all of it up and willingly helped our new coach (Kelly Singer) with this task.
Kudos to Dana Zumbrum whose art was selected to be in the VB Education Foundation commemorative print contest. You can vote for Dana's artwork here. It is entitled, Halfshell."
