WE ARE STALLIONS
Principal's Note
Good morning,
I hope this message finds you and your family well. It has been an exciting five weeks at SMS since our last newsletter! During that time we've had: Boys Basketball, Wrestling and Cheerleading start up, field trips to Feed My Starving Children, a successful Penny Wars in which we raised over $960 for our annual Holiday Gift Giving program, we opened our doors for American Education Week and had Parent-Teacher Conferences with the best student attendance to date! These are great events and accomplishments that represent the many ways that we work together to make Stratford a great place to learn. Thank you!
I'd also like to highlight some of the great things going on in our classrooms at this time. In a seventh grade humanities class, students explored using sketchnoting as a tool for them to make more lasting connections with content while taking notes. In several of our classrooms, teachers are exploring using a "flipped" classroom approach by creating instructional videos that students can watch, re-watch and refer back to when needed. Not only does this allow students to set the pace of their learning, but it also allows teachers more individual time with students. Lastly, several teachers are implementing more and more choice into their lessons through "station" work and student self-reflection. For example, this week, sixth grade science students had the chance to evaluate their understanding and choose which topics they needed to review in preparation of the assessment. They then chose from 4-5 stations of activities and interacted with review work that addressed each standard. Needless to say, it is exciting to observe how student choice and interests are being incorporated into learning at Stratford.
Finally, as we prepare for the Chicago winter that we've all come to love (or at least embrace), I have just a few reminders for students and parents:
- Please make sure that students dress for the weather (coats, gloves, hats, etc.).
- Please take care driving through our parking lot. Due to snow and ice, it can often make it harder to stop quickly, requiring everyone to take extra precautions such as driving more slowly, double checking directions before turning and perhaps driving in a lower gear.
I hope you and your family have a positive end to 2016 and an enjoyable start to 2017!
Sincerely,
Mr. Dawson
