Hampton Bays Middle School
Monday Memo #8
What if...
What an awesome time of year it is to be a member of our HBMS community. We're past the Back to School milestones and on the verge of the holiday season. Halloween represents a hinge point for us and for our students. It's an outstanding display of team unity, collaboration, and a sense that middle school can be a really fun place!
Something else that comes along with this time of year is our sense of our routines. I'm the first to admit, I live by my routines because they help me focus on being productive, and give me satisfaction of "getting things done".
We all know about school routines and this time of year. Halloween becomes Thanksgiving, Christmas, the Winter and Spring Recess, and then...POOF! It's another Moving Up Ceremony. For those of us who've been around to experience it, yes. This is EXACTLY how fast a school year goes.
So how do we "slow it down"?
It starts by allowing ourselves the chance to break out of the routines every so often. Or committing to start a new one. Take a look at the quote above. When I came across this awhile back, it made me think of three things.
1. How do we #engageHB?
2. Why is it important to celebrate learning?
3. How do we promote a positive school culture?
Recently I read a book in which the author wrote about shifting our view of school...from teaching to learning. That really resonated with me, because we have so many teachers who seem to "get" this idea. And these days, if you take a look at #engageHB, you'll notice some new faces on there, and from some new places. We are growing capacity in one another, in our school and then some. And we're only just getting started...
So, what if...?
What if we each shared one thing a day and what if we each invested five minutes in sharing what we know and love about the culture of learning at HBMS?
This week, I encourage you to launch this discussion with your respective teams and then...#engageHB!
Thanks for all you do for our students and our middle school program.
Sincerely,
Dennis
