Mrs. Turley's Tidbits
Week of 4/3 - 4/7
We're in the FINAL Quarter of 2nd Grade!
Fundations:
We finished Until 12 which worked with -oy and -oi sounds. We began Unit 13 which focuses on long o sound in -oa, -oe, and -ow sounds. In Week 2 of this unit, we will be reviewing suffix endings.
Literacy:
We are really excited that we will be using the Calkins Literacy Program to finish the school year! This will replace the Schoolwide Program we were using. In this new unit for reading, we have started talking about series books and the characters that star in them. We are noticing that the main characters are the same in all the series books/stories and their character traits remain the same too. We are looking for evidence to prove that these characters respond to problems and situations in a similar method. This learning target supports Common Core Standard RL.2.3 - Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges.
Many of the second graders in our class are becoming character experts on Greg in Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Junie in Junie B. Jones, Flat Stanley in the Flat Stanley books and Frog and or Toad in the Frog and Toad books.
Math:
We have moved into Geometry! This is Unit 5 in our Math Curriculum. We are making sure we know the difference between 2-D and 3-D shapes and learning the names of many shapes. We learned how 2-D shapes have angles and sides. We even learned about 3-D shapes and their vertices, faces, and edges.
Writing Workshop:
We will be starting our Opinion Writing unit! We are writing about our favorite characters in books so it matches nicely with our Calkins Literacy! Our opinion writing is in the form of a letter, so we have to be expert letter writers while we write our opinion!
Dinosaurs:
Did you know that we are experts on dinosaurs? Our dinosaur dioramas sure do show it! The dioramas gave us an opportunity to show our creativity as well. We can't wait to show these dioramas to you at Open House!
Also, many of the dinosaur museums we wrote to in February wrote us back! Earlier this week we had both second grades together and passed out the "dinosaur mail." It was amazing! Some students even received posters, brochures, coloring sheets, etc. We were very thrilled when The Field Museum wrote to EVERY 2nd grade student at Meadowview! How cool was that???? The dinosaur expert that wrote to us is also going to meet us at the Field Museum next week and give us a special tour! We also had a dinosaur museum in Western Colorado send us casts of real dinosaur teeth!!! We have a bunch of very happy budding paleontologists!
