Mrs. Gee's Preschool News
Pumpkin Week Fun
This week we learned all about the lifecycle of a pumpkin. We practiced retelling the story Pumpkin Pumpkin by Jeanne Titherington. We acted out how a pumpkin grows, starting as a seed, to a sprout, vines, flower, small pumpkin, grows and grows into a big orange pumpkin! We were scientists this week as we worked on some pumpkin investigations. We used snap cubes to measure how tall our pumpkins were. We conducted a sink or float experiment. We carved into a pumpkin to see what the pulp and seeds were like using our five senses. We even made our own pumpkin pie on Friday! Wow it's been a busy week! Thanks for sending in all of the pumpkins for our learning fun!
Math focus
We are continually working on getting to know and understand numbers 1-10. Counting using one to one correspondence and fully understanding the value of each number is a key math focus. We have worked with manipulatives to practice basic addition concepts up to five. We used pumpkins and gourds to solve Mrs. Gee's pumpkin problem this week. "I need five items and I want some pumpkins and some gourds. How can I solve my problem? What can I buy?" We practiced different ways to make five. One gourd, plus four pumpkins, and so on. We also got out some ten frames and used Halloween counting pieces to practice counting to a given number.
