Homestead act

On May 20 1862 Lincoln signed the homestead act which was mostly directed at U.S immigrants & citizens and granted 160 acres in public land in exchange for a small filling fee and had to have lived there for 5 years Prior to receiving the land

Farming the plains

In the 1830's the great plains where opened to settlers giving 160 had been there for 5 years for people who were trying to start a new life and make their fortune
