Partnership between YMCA and School District lauded
The strong partnership between the YMCA of Grays Harbor and the Aberdeen School District was recognized during the annual Community Leadership Awards Banquet for the Capital Region ESD 113 on May 25.
The YMCA and School District partner on a number of programs to benefit student health and well-being, including the 21st Century After School Program, elementary swim lessons and swim and dive teams.
Of special note were the activity and conditioning pods the YMCA and School District teamed up to provide in 2020-2021 when all schooling was remote and all buildings were closed. The district athletic staff operated conditioning for the sports teams at Stewart Field and the YMCA staff operated “activity pods” that were available to all students in the covered outdoor areas at the schools.
“This partnership truly made a difference in the lives of our students during the most difficult days of the pandemic,” Superintendent Alicia Henderson said. “We started talking and within days, thanks to the leadership of Executive Director Franzine Potts and her staff, the program was up and running.”
"Our longstanding partnerships in other areas continue to make a difference in the lives of our young people each and every day," she added.
In addition, Dr. Henderson was recognized for her service in education, including the last five in Aberdeen. She is retiring June 30.
