CHS Tennis Team
The CHS Tennis teams took to the courts before Spring Break for a 6A sectional match against Athens. The varsity men defeated Athens 8-1, and the varsity ladies came away with a 9-0 win.
Wins for the men in singles included (1) Jackson Murphree 6-0, 6-0; (2) Chas NeSmith 6-1, 6-2; (3) Eli Chaney 6-4, 6-1; (5) Jaden Orr 6-0, 6-0; and (6) Bennett Cabri 6-2, 6-0. Doubles wins included (1) Jackson Murphree/Chas NeSmith 6-1, 6-0; (2) Eli Chaney/Will Shirey 6-2, 6-0; (3) Jaden Orr/Bennett Cabri 6-1, 6-2.
Wins for the ladies in singles included (1) Kate Krigbaum 6-0, 6-0; (2) Katia Peterson 6-1, 6-0; (3) Sophia Karolewics 6-1, 6-1; (4) Caroline Hill 6-2, 6-0; (5) Emma Murphree 6-2, 6-1; (6) Avery Heis 6-0, 6-0. Doubles wins included (1) Kate Krigbaum/Katia Peterson 6-0, 6-3; (2) Sophia Karolewics/Caroline Hill 6-2, 6-0; (3) Emma Murphree/SaraBeth Land 6-1, 6-1.
On the Friday before Spring Break, the varsity teams traveled to Tuscaloosa to play in round-robin matches against players from Opelika and Hillcrest High Schools. Some of the Cullman seniors stayed behind during the early matches against Opelika to participate in the Paradise Lost trials, giving some of our younger players some extra match experience. Singles winners against Opelika included Kate Krigbaum, Katia Peterson, Sophia Karolewics, Caroline Hill, Avery Heis, and SaraBeth Land. Doubles wins included Kate Krigbaum/Katia Peterson, Sophia Karolewics/Caroline Hill, and SaraBeth Land/Sadie Land. On the men’s side, everyone played higher positions with several players missing. Eli Chaney came away with an impressive win against Opelika’s top-seeded player. Cullman faced some talented players from Hillcrest in the afternoon matches. Kate Krigbaum defeated their top-seeded player 8-5. Other ladies wins against Hillcrest were earned by Katia Peterson 8-7, Sophia Karolewics 8-5, and Avery Heis 9-7. In the men’s matches, Jackson Murphree defeated Hillcrest’s top-seeded player 8-1, and Chas NeSmith defeated their second-seeded player 8-3.
The varsity ladies got in an extra match over Spring Break against Gardendale. Cullman had several players out of town, but utilized their depth and came away with a strong 8-1 win. Singles winners included Kate Krigbaum, Sophia Karolewics, Avery Heis, SaraBeth Land, Sadie Land, and Lanie Townson. Doubles winners were Sophia Karolewics/Avery Heis and SaraBeth Land/Sadie Land.
The Bearcats will enter the final week of regular season play this week with matches against Arab, Boaz, and Jasper before heading to the sectional tournament in Decatur on April 13th.
CHS Softball Update
Cullman Softball competed in the Bob Jones Tournament over Spring Break. In the first game the Lady Bearcats face #7 in 6A Fort Payne. In the first inning Haley Shannon led things off with a single. Savannah Davis then smoked a 3-2 pitch in the left center field gap to score Shannon. Davis was thrown out at third on a pass ball. Emma Claire Wilson then doubled and Carlie Burnham stepped up to the plate and delivered a 2 run home run. Making the score 3-1 Cullman.
Fort Payne would retake the lead in the top of the fourth 4-3. But in the bottom of the fourth Savannah Davis led things off with a triple. Chalea Clemmons then delivered an opposite field moon shot to give the Bearcats a 5-4 lead. Chalea Clemmons pitched an excellent game going the distance and striking out 6 batters.
Next up was James Clemens. The Bearcats strike first with a three run home run by Emma Claire Wilson. In the top of the fourth Cullman would break the game wide open plating 9 runs in the inning. Dayln Phillips doubled to score Shana Guest who reached base on a hit by pitch. Sarah Herfurth then doubled to score Kylie Stracener who was running for Phillips. Haley Shannon then tripled to score Herfurth. Savannah Davis then doubled to score Shannon. Chalea Clemmons then delivered a two run missile over the center field fence to make it 10-0 Bearcats.
Emma Claire Wilson then doubled, and scored on an inside the park home run by Faith Guest. Shana Guest then singled and scored on a Dayln Phillips double making it 13-0 Bearcats. James Clemens would add a run in the bottom of the fourth. Final score 13-1 Cullman.
The Bearcats took on the reigning 6A state champions Buckhorn Bucks in the first game of elimination. This game was a pitcher's duel between Chalea Clemmons and Buckhorn’s Alivia Wilken. No one scored until the top of the fifth inning when Buckhorn’s lead off hitter connected for a two run home run. Buckhorn would add another run in the top of the sixth. The Bearcats had a chance to do damage in the bottom of the sixth with bases loaded and one out. Cullman got on the board when Faith Guest was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score a run. The Bearcats were unable to push any more runs across the plate. Final Score 3-1 Buckhorn. This ended an 8 game win streak for the Lady Bearcats.
Congratulations to Chalea Clemmons who picked up her 100th strike out this weekend.

This week we are hosting the NOALA Jr. High Circuit Meet on Tuesday, April 6th, competing in the NOALA Jr. High Circuit Championship at Bob Jones on Thursday, April 8th, and our Varsity is traveling to Mountain Brook Friday and Saturday for the prestigious Mountain Brook Invite under the Lights. We are in the heart of the track and field season and just a couple of weeks away from the Championship Phase of the varsity season.
