Mrs. Summers' Classroom Newsletter

2nd Grade at Addams Elementary School

This past week at a Glance....

October 10, 2016

Reading: This week we continued to focus on making connections as readers. We read the stories Jamaica Tag Along, and Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day. These stories were easy for us to connect to as many of us have siblings like Jamaica and have had a day that is not the best! We began using "Readmojos" to help us recommend books to each other. These are a series of faces that we draw to show our thoughts on the books that we are reading. We shared these with our reading partners and in our Reader's Response Journals.

Writing: As small moment story writers this week we focused on the leads in our story and hooking our readers in. We also worked to provide details to help the story come alive and tried to "Show not tell" so that we painted a picture with our words.

Math: This week some of the students began to help lead our math daily routines. This was very exciting and we will continue to work toward making this part of our day completely student led. Our studies also focused on using math talk to explain our thinking and work on comparison word problems.

Social Studies: With Mrs. Nellis the students continued to learn about communities.

Science: With Mrs. McMillan the students used their scientific skills in a fun experiment working with ice:)

Making Thinking Visible

As many of you know we are working hard to make our thinking visible as we learn and grow. This week we used a routine called "See Think Wonder". This helped us to share our thoughts on what we noticed on the cover of a book we were about to read. It is always amazing what you notice when you really focus on an image!

Ways to Help Our School and the Community this Month

FUN RUN UPDATE:

Our Class is working toward a class goal of raising $1,000 by the Fun Run Day on Oct. 21st. So far we have raised just over $270 which is great. The kids are enjoying the school rewards so far. Mr. Youanes is going to dress like a superhero next week!

We still have time to get pledges in!

There is a link below "Get Movin" for our classroom progress towards out goal!

Also in the month of October each classroom has been given a box to collect donations for UNICEF. This organization works world-wide to provide things that people may need like pumps for water, vaccines and medical care where needed. If you wish to donate to this great cause please send it in when you can. Change or bills are fine.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS IN BOTH OF THESE AREAS SO FAR!

Watch D.O.G.S.

We had our kick off event for our Watch D.O.G.S. program this past week and had a great turn out. The program name stands for "Dads of Great Students". It was nice to see a few of you there from our class and we look forward to you coming to volunteer in our school. If you did not attend the event but are interested please let me know and I will get you some information.
