Jackets Needed!
It tends to get a little chilly at times in our classroom. Your child is welcome to bring a sweatshirt or jacket to leave at school in the closet so they'll have something to wear if they get cold.
If you’d like to sit with your child at lunch we’d love to have you. Lunch begins at 11:47 a.m. If you wish to eat the school lunch, please call the office to order a tray.
Homework
Your child's nightly homework: Read 20 minutes every night!
Your child's nightly homework: Read 20 minutes every night!
Your child will not have homework this year unless:
1. They are absent and make up work for the day will be sent home.
2. They are falling behind on Rocket Math facts, at which time I will send a letter to inform you there will be homework until they catch up and/ or meet the expected level.
Reading
This week reviewed some skills (vowel sounds, predicting, comprehension, vocabulary, setting, characters, problem and solution, making connections and comparisons) using Kevin Henkes' books Shelia Rae the Brave and Chester's Way We are also working hard on our classroom procedures for our Daily 5 stations.
Math
Solving one step word problems
I'm going to start sending a link to 2 things each week
1. another copy of our practice and problem solving pages from our workbook. We do these in class, but it would be a great way to have more practice. (You could even change the numbers in the problems to switch things up a little )
2. Some extra practice worksheets that don't necessarily go with our math, but follow the same skills. I would strongly encourage you to have your child do these for practice USING the strategies that are introduced in our math program.

Lastly, if you're not reading the parent letter that comes home each week highlighting our math skills AND giving you some great activities to strengthen those skills, you need to take 5 minutes and look that over. This math is very different than anything the kids have seen in previous grades. For you to understand what we are doing, you're going to need to read that letter.

Homework Help and Hints!
Two words that are necessary for success with your 2nd grader at school and at home!
Routines: Establish a homework routine with your child. Find a special place (kitchen table, desk, etc) where they will sit to complete their work. When kids know what to do, when to do it and where to do it, they need almost J no reminders to do their homework. Keep other routines as well: bedtime, tv time, reading time, chores, etc. and I promise your household will run as smooth as a ride down the slide at recess.
Independence: Let them complete as much as they can on their own first, then they can ask for help. In second grade they complete many activities and assignments independently. This is a change from first grade and they aren’t always used to doing things on their own. We want them to be independent at home and at school. Oh, and if you ask them to fold the towels they might not look like you want them to the first few times, just show them how each time, be patient, and before long your linen closet will look perfect!
Data Binders- Look for them Monday
Thank you for your comments inside! Just a reminder if you have a question for me, please don't write it in the binder. I don't usually get to look at them until later in the week and I want to respond to you in a timely manner. Thanks for helping the kids get them back to school on Tuesday!
