Coming in April…One School, One Book
Dear Parent/Guardian:
I am very pleased to inform Southside families that beginning April 1; we will be embarking on our third annual all school book club called “One School, One Book”. This program is endorsed by a number of organizations, including the International Reading Association. The “One School, One Book Program” provides the opportunity for all families at Southside to “experience” the same book at the same time. The program is in place at schools throughout the country, with the fundamental purpose being to “build a community of readers”.
Two years ago our One School, One Book Program engaged Southside families in the reading of Mr. Popper’s Penguins by Richard and Florence Atwater. Over 350 of our families participated in this project by reading the book together. Each chapter reading was followed by various curriculum related lessons and activities in individual classrooms and as a school. If you check out the Read to Them website, www.readtothem.org, you will find numerous pictures posted on the main page of the activities. Last year, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl was shared during the month of March and once again, approximately 380 families shared the experience.
Again this year, following a kickoff assembly on April 1st, each Southside family will receive a copy of the same book (the book title remains “top” secret for now!) and will be invited to read it at home, as a family, over the course of approximately four weeks.
Along with the family book, each student will receive a bookmark, a reading schedule, reading logs for each child and a calendar of events. The schedule will usually be to read one chapter per night, approximately 15 minutes of reading. The chapters are short and quite engaging, so we anticipate this will be a special experience for your family.
Reading aloud at home is valuable because it better prepares your child to be an effective reader, but it is also a fun, worthwhile family activity. As you are reading the book with your family, the Southside staff will also be reading. A special link on the Southside home page will document the various activities related to this project, including a link to audio recordings of various people reading the book. I encourage you to check this link frequently during the program, as we have a few special activities planned.
“When a whole school reads a book, there is a lot to talk about.” Because the entire Southside family will be reading the same book, we have the opportunity to meaningfully integrate many of the components of the story into our school day. Daily trivia quizzes and activities are just some of the things we have planned. Once we get started, remember to ask your child if anything “special” happened related to the book.
On behalf of the Southside staff, please accept my thanks for joining us in this project. We very much look forward to sharing this experience with you.
Southside’s 2015-2016 READING CHALLENGE
Beginning November 20th Southside students will be challenged to read a book for each BINGO square.
Mark an “X” over the square when completed and add the book title to the corresponding line on the back of the BINGO card. An adult must initial each book read.
Once you have completed a Black Out bring your BINGO card to Ms. Wilson, our Librarian, and you will receive an invitation to our End of the Year Reading Celebration.
You will also get caped with your “Reading Super Power” cape and your picture will be added to our “Reading is My Super Power” Wall of Fame.
