Athletic Director
Department: High School
UNION EXEMPT: Yes
REPORTS TO: High School Principal
WORK DAYS: Monday – Friday, Some Saturdays
JOB Summary
The Athletic Director will work closely with the principal, school personnel, community, and students to provide leadership, service, and coordination in directing the MS and HS athletic program.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
A. Leadership Supervision
- Supervises and evaluates all high school and middle school head coaches providing direction and advice.
- Works cooperatively with Coaches Association President to develop a professional development focusing on continuous improvement for all coaches and athletic programs.
- Approves all professional development activities for coaching staff based on district goals and parameters.
- Submits coaching evaluations within a timely manner.
- Supervises high school home athletic contests and acts as the host for officials and visiting schools (including set-up, clean-up and ensuring safety. Arranges for game supervision for middle school contests.
- Oversees the supervision of all contest employees and volunteers including ticket takers and concession workers.
- Promotes, encourages and instructs exemplary sportsmanship among coaches, athletes, students and fans.
- Develops and implements appropriate rules and regulations governing the conduct of athletic activities, contests, participants and observers.
- Responds timely and professionally to personnel issues for the purpose of clarifying issues and implementing actions to address needs.
- Interacts thoughtfully and courteously with students, staff and parents and resolves conflict in a professional manner.
- Supervises and directs the coaching staff to ensure proper practice schedules are maintained.
B. Planning/Organization
- Plan and schedule all district athletic events for the entire school year in relation to WIAA and District VI regulations and the district calendar.
- Participate with other league athletic directors in planning, coordinating and implementing league games, events and activities for both MS and HS contests.
- Advise and coordinate with MS game manager regarding all MS contests.
- Coordinates all athletic related services including programs, rosters, bus requests, scheduling officials and coordinating with coaches and school administration.
- Work closely with secretarial staff at the both the building and district level to communicate all events on a master calendar.
C. Administration

- Maintains necessary records and completes required paperwork in a specified time and manner.
- ensures that that proper form(s), (insurance, attendance, medical) are obtained and current for students
- ensures that all students are eligible, insured and have paid all fees
D. Administration (cont.)
- Remain current on all rule and eligibility changes within WIAA and District VI League and keep all coaches informed.
- Assists coaches in managing all athletic gear, maintenance of equipment, and recommends purchase and replacement of gear and equipment.
- Hold regular coaches meetings that coincide with sport seasons to review expectations, rule changes etc.
- Provides leadership for and serves as liaison to high school athletic booster club and coordinates with coaches, the support group for specific athletic program.
- Maintain regular, open communication with principals and the superintendent about the needs, successes and general operation of the athletic programs. Recommend policies and procedures to promote a healthy and supportive climate for athletics.
E. Personnel / Staffing
- In consultation with the building principal, makes recommendations for the hiring and dismissal of head coaches.
- Assist the HR Director in developing posting and job descriptions for new hires.
- Works cooperatively with head coaches to select assistant coaches for all programs.
- Provide orientation, direction and training for all head coaches.
- As a servant leader, helps coaches succeed in their programs.
F. Public Relations
- Serve as a spokesperson and promoter of athletics for the Tonasket School District.
- Coordinate and assist visiting teams and officials and arrange for necessary services.
- Schedule, plan and coordinate sports award banquets.

- Communicate with all public relations sources (Newspaper, social media, radio etc.) on a regular basis.
Knowledge of:
- Coaching and leadership principals
- Creating and implementing student behavior expectations
- Conflict resolution strategies
- State policy and laws affecting the athletic program
Ability to:
- Build positive relationships with students, staff, parents and community members
- Collaborate and communicate effectively with key stakeholders through a variety of methods
- Provide leadership for the athletic program

- Plan, organize and manage time and resources
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred
- Washington State Driver’s License
- Current or Pending First Aid Card
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Coaching and or leadership experience in a school setting. Experience in Athletic Director responsibilities preferred.
Mandatory Conditions of Employment
- Successful clearance of the FBI and Washington State Patrol fingerprint background check.
- Successful Washington State Sexual Misconduct clearance.
- Completion of Federal I-9, Employment Verification Eligibility form.
