Wayland Union Schools

Wayland Union Schools has applied for grant funding through the State of Michigan in order to offer our students supplemental learning opportunities during the summer months. This flyer includes information about programming available for students who are currently enrolled at Wayland Union Schools and will be updated as additional details become available.

Young 5s - 3rd Grade

Kids Read Now

Wayland Union Schools has partnered with Kids Read Now (KRN), a non-profit company, that will send FREE books to your child over the summer that they can keep forever! Teachers and Principals are working with students during the months of March and April to pick the books that they would like to be sent to them this summer. Students who read/report all 9 books that they receive this summer will receive a special prize next fall!

Young 5s - 5th Grade

Summer Learning Camp Program

Wayland Union Schools will be providing optional academic programming to currently enrolled students in Young 5s-5th grade. Space in this program is limited and spots will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Option 1: In-Person Summer Learning Program
Monday-Friday from June 21st - August 13th, 8am-Noon (no programming on 7/2 or 7/5)
Held at Steeby Elementary
Transportation, Breakfast, and Lunch provided

Option 2: Virtual Summer Learning Program
Individual and Small Group Reading Instruction
Monday-Friday from June 21st - August 13th, 8am-Noon (no programming on 7/2 or 7/5)
(students will have scheduled lessons between 8am and Noon but will not be online for the entire window)
Held virtually via Zoom, students will be provided with required books/materials, parents/guardians will just need to assist students in getting logged in to Zoom at the appropriate time

Students who were already enrolled in summer programming based on earlier sign-ups have been automatically enrolled in this new programming.

6th - 8th Grade


Wayland Union Schools will be providing academic programming to currently enrolled students in grades 6-8.

Programming will be held Monday-Friday from June 21st-August 13th (no programming will be held on July 2nd or 5th) from 8 am-Noon at Steeby Elementary School.

Students will be provided with transportation and meals.

Communication regarding enrollment in this program will be sent by Wayland Union Middle School during the month of May.

9th -12 Grade

Credit Recovery

Wayland Union Schools is applying for grant funds from the State of Michigan in order to offer high school students the opportunity to recover credits lost or to improve failing grades that may have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Additional details on this programming are forthcoming. Programming will begin as before/after school programming during the balance of this school year and transition into summer programming after June 4th.

Building a Community of Readers

One of the best ways for parents to support kids at home is by fostering a love of reading! Make sure your child has access to a variety of books that they are interested in and can read. Our local public libraries are amazing resources. Our district has also been working on a project called Building a Community of Readers project to increase access to books by placing them in locations that our students visit or live close to. Check out the app linked below to find the locations of many Little Free Libraries in our community that provide a source of books for your child!
