The Weekly Star
Montessori Academy at Onesimo Hernandez #5
Principal's Corner
Hello Montessori Family,
We are beginning week #5 of school and we are excited about what our children have been learning in their prepared environments. I would like to highlight the role of the adult in the Casa.
What is the role of the adult in the Casa?
- Adult role- freedom so that the child can make the choices guided by innate law of development. Freedom to make mistakes, this is a safe environment to work with the materials.
- Adult provides necessary and sufficient help. Adult serves to support the development of child not his body. Adult needs to see and offer help by configuring the environment in a different way or if needs help can the adult offer a presentation to develop the skill that the child can use in the prepared environment.
- The child is making errors in table washing, the adult brings him back to the points of interests. Thus, this is the solution and it is not to do it for him. This way he will grow from making these judgments. Also, we must break the habit of child asking the adult, “is this right?” to bring it to their attention with the control of error and having the child conclude if correct.
- Observe, reflect and plan and implement= this is the work of the prepared adult
- The task of the teacher is to be active and complex when the didactive material is presented.
- Child’s work does not always need, Great! Good Job!!Instead say, “I saw you working for a very long time…your effort is seen”. As a prepared adult, you can bring it back the judgement to the child. “Do you like your drawing?”
- Always look respectful and glorious as the child’s mother, gentle and graceful as possible. Happy and graciously dignified. Attraction that will polarize the will of the child.
- Be conscious of attire and what the child can see from their perspective.
- Teacher’s praise during the work and concentration of the child- should not be interrupted.

Year Round College and Career Readiness
During Education Go Get It Week our students were engaged in college and career exploration. In classroom guidance, children were eager to share their career aspirations and listen to those visitors who also shared their college. We wrote about our careers and we created graduation hats to remind us of the possibilities of our dreams. Heighten college and career awareness is important so these lessons will be on-going throughout the school year.
Parents, we appreciate your support of this effort by reinforcing to our children the importance of having academic and social skills to prepare them for college and potential careers. It is important for them to understand how what they’re learning now helps them pursue their dreams. If they want to become a police officer, they need to know how to write tickets and fill out reports. If they want to become an accountant, they need to know how to do math. If they want to become a chef, they need to know how to read a recipe and understand fractions when they measure the ingredients.
It is important that our children discover that the grades they earn today will affect them when colleges are deciding which students they want in their school and who will get the scholarships. They also discover the importance of showing up to school on time and not missing too many days because it makes it difficult to be employed with that type of pattern.
Encourage those conversations by having students ask you questions about your experiences in school: What did you like? Were you encouraged to do well in school? What messages did adults (parents, teachers) give you? Did you go to college? Why or why not? If you had a chance to further your education, what would you study?
Parents, then ask your child a series of questions: What do you like the most about school? Why do you want to go to college? Where do you want to go to college? What job do you want to have when you grow up? Ask them why college is important and what it involves and develop a plan as a family how students can meet their goals.
Thank you for your efforts. It really does take a village to raise our children.

Dismissal: Car Tag Hangers
We have ordered our car tags that will hang over the rear view mirror to help facilitate the pick up line. Coach Torres and crew have been doing an excellent job keeping our children safe and secure while running the carpool line. Soon, we will be implementing the number car tags in lieu of calling last names over the radio for our children. Families will be given a car tag to hang and their number will be announced over the radio for pick up.
