Class of 2021
After applying for admission, it's a waiting game and time to think about making a decision.
The difficult part of making a college decision is that the cost of a year at most colleges can range from $10,000 to $70,000. The good news is that if a family needs financial aid to help meet college costs, students are likely to receive it in some form, even if it is not as much as you would hope. This advice is worth remembering: cost should never be a deterrent in choosing the colleges to which a student will apply. The definition of who qualifies for aid may be broader than you think. Always be open to applying for financial aid – if a family doesn’t apply for financial aid, they will never receive any.
Families should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid if looking for need based financial aid. The FAFSA is the only form required for federal aid consideration, which can include grants, loans and work study. Some colleges also require an additional financial form called the CSS Profile. Please check the college’s requirements when applying.
In addition, remember to check the College Counseling Resource Board in Blackbaud for the most current information and helpful resources.
College Guide
1. Send Standardized Tests - please feel free to reach out to your counselor if you have taken a standardized test and are deciding whether or not to submit.
2. Complete FERPA Waiver - This is found in the individual school section of the Common Application. Choose one of the schools you are applying to and complete.
3. MATCH Common Application with your Naviance Account (Must complete FERPA waiver to do this).
4. Add Letter of Recommendation requests in Naviance (Must MATCH your account first). This is done in Naviance NOT in your Common Application.
5. Submit Google Transcript Request Form - This has to be completed ONE MONTH prior to your college application deadline. See directions:
Checking Application Status
- Your College Counselor has sent your first quarter grades and your midterm grades will be submitted in January to each college/university, when available.
- To help you keep track of your application and credentials, once a student submits an application to a college/university, he/she will receive a confirmation email and a link to "check the status of your application.
- It can take a college/university up to 2-3 weeks to process your credentials that were sent electronically. When your college counselor and teacher submit their documents to colleges/universities, it is electronically date stamped when it arrives. However, it can take up to 2-3 weeks for a student's application "status” change to "complete."
- Once a student's application is "complete" it will be reviewed for an admission decision. Please check with each specific college if it has a release date for admission decisions.

Class of 2022
The college search process continues as students will receive their PSAT/MNSQT results, begin standardized test prep, and visit colleges (virtually and/or in-person). Each student will learn how to navigate the College Board and Naviance to research how their academic backgrounds line up with their college search. A big part of researching schools is the location and deciding which college is a fit.
A college a plane flight away may give you exposure to a different part of the country, but it could also mean limited home visits and high travel expenses. Students should also consider the setting in which the school is located. Colleges in major cities differ greatly from those in small towns or rural areas. Each setting offers advantages and disadvantages, and students must decide which is right for them.
Students must complete the Game Plan survey in their Naviance account by Wednesday, January 13, 2021, as they consider the following questions:
- In what part of the country do I want to focus my college search? Rhode Island, New England, out of the region?
- How important is it to me to be close to home?
- Do I see myself in a big city or would I prefer a more rural or suburban setting?
- What academic program/majors am I interested in exploring?
Please Save the Date for Wednesday, January 13, 2021, at 6:30 pm for the Virtual College Admission Planning Program for Students & Parents/Guardians of the Class of 2022.
More details to come at the beginning of January.
