November
A November to Remember!
Message from the Principal
Another month has flown by! We are now one quarter of the way through the school year. The students and staff have been doing an amazing job of working hard and thinking with a growth mindset. Everyday we (students and staff) are all working hard at getting smart!
At Garfield we emphasize an important life lesson... never give up! We tell the kids that sometimes school might be really challenging, but we don't give up when things get hard. We like to call it the power of yet! I can't do that...YET!! This lesson isn't just about school work, but about life. I can't do a roundoff cartwheel...yet. I can't do a 360 on my skateboard...yet. I can't juggle...yet!
This is the power of a growth mindset. Hard work and a willingness to try a different strategy will take our kids far in life. If you are interested in reading more about a growth-mindset here is a great article by Carol Dweck--the psychologist that coined the phrase "growth-mindset." Click on the words "great article."
With the month of December, brings the extra cold weather. Please remember when the temperatures fall, to make sure your child brings snow pants, boots, hat, and mittens to school for recess. Even if there isn't snow, the boots and snow pants will keep the kids warm!
Wishing all of you a wonderful holiday season!
Ms. Cassandra Schultz

THESE KIDS ARE PROPELLED BY GREAT CHARACTER!!
Library fun with Mrs. Dombrowski
Our cardboard challenge, on Nov. 6th, was awesome! The students and I were inspired by the short film “Caine’s Arcade.” The event celebrates the power of creative play and children's imagination. (you can watch the film here) I started out by showing them the film and asking them to draw what they wanted to build. Some of the children worked on their own and others worked as a team. They used their imaginations and creativity to construct something amazing out of cardboard. I would like to thank everyone that sent boxes and tape, it is greatly appreciated. I would also like to thank all the staff that came to help. Here are some pictures from the event.

National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness week
During the week of November 13-17th, Marinette School’s are challenging each other to compete in a change drive competition to raise awareness and support for local organizations that provide services for homelessness and hunger.
We at Garfield held a penny war and collected $336.78. Mrs. Borths class raised the most money...$78.45
Below are some pictures of the children separating out the pennies from the rest of the coins.....It is a great program and we are so grateful we can help those that need it.

Thank you to the Fire Department for visiting us.
WE ARE NEED OF YOUR HELP PLEASE
We are asking for your help. At times, some students are in need a pair of pants, a sweatshirt, a coat, or even a pair of socks or undergarment. We have been fortunate in the past to be able to provide these items to our students.
At this time we are running low on all clothing. Sweatpants or leggings work great as they can accommodate more sizes.
If you have any clean pants or tops, we would appreciate any donations you could help us with. Children's sizes ranging from a 5-14.
Thank you for your help.
If you have any questions please contact Mrs. Cunningham in the office.
