SMS Scholastic Book Fair November 14th -November 20th

We are very excited to host a Scholastic Book Fair! The fair will be held during school hours, starting on November 14th and running through November 20th. Additionally, we will be open to the public after school on November 15th from 2:45 pm until 7:00pm.

Students will all have an opportunity to attend the fair with their teams, typically in ELA classes. They can also attend the fair with permission during RISE periods.

You can preview some of the items that will be for sale at the book fair here with this interactive flyer.

Can't make it in person to the book fair? Order online by clicking this link.

Volunteers are always needed to help with this event. Please email your availability to Jennifer Bishop at jbishop@scarboroughschools.org.

Laptop Updates

We are seeing an uptick in laptop damages at SMS. Repairs have totalled over $2700 at this time. We ask that families reinforce laptop expectations at home. Students should keep devices in their assigned bags, and in the straps, at all times. Bags must be zipped upon transport and should not be placed into other bags (ie, backpacks/duffle bags, etc). If a student forgets their laptop, they may borrow one from the library. They will be issued a bag with the loaner device and the same expectations apply. Students should know where their laptop is at all times.

Only accidental damage is covered by the use fee. Negligence is not covered and includes closing items in the laptop, any damage occurring when a device is left on the floor, etc. If the use fee was not paid at the start of the year damage, whether deemed negligence or accidental, is not covered. For more information, please review the Chromebook Care Guide under Forms in Powerschool.

SMS Nursing Communication

We have recently seen an increase in influenza both in our school as well as in Cumberland County. Some common symptoms of influenza this year include a runny nose, sneezing, sore throat, fever/body aches, and vomiting or diarrhea. Please keep your student home if they are experiencing any of these symptoms to prevent further spread. We also recommend students see their doctor to be tested for the flu if they are feeling ill.

You can visit the CDC website for more information on the flu at https://maineflu.gov/

Contact the nursing clinic if you have any questions or concerns.

Kiwanis Sock Drive

The Scarborough Kiwanis Club is pleased to partner with Scarborough Schools to collect adult socks, gloves/mittens, and hats for donation to Preble Street for distribution to persons experiencing homelessness. These clothing items can be used in good condition or purchased new. Collection bins will be available at each school and clothing items can be donated by students, faculty, and staff between Monday November 28th and Friday December 16th. Thank you in advance for your generosity!

Scarborough School Nutrition

If you would like to add money to your student's lunch account for the purchase of any "a la carte" items, you can either send in cash or check with your student, or load money onto their account by visiting the online payment portal Lunch Time.

Also, if you have not done so, please take a moment to complete the Free & Reduced Lunch Form even if you do not believe you would qualify. You may also complete the form online here.

WHY? Key federal funds are tied to data from these applications. Programs that are impacted from these include:

Student Absence Reporting

Families should report their middle school student's absence from school by calling the SMS main office at 207-730-4800 or by email at msoffice@scarboroughschools.org. A reason for the absence must be stated, otherwise SMS office staff will reach out to determine the reason for the absence.

Excusable reasons for an absence:

  • illness
  • appointment
  • religious holiday
  • family emergency
  • planned absence

For Planned Absences (a day out of school which is not illness or medical appointment related), families should fill out the Scarborough Middle School Planned Absence form, which is found here.

For questions about attendance, please contact the Scarborough Middle School main office at 207-730-4800 or email us at msoffice@scarboroughschools.org
