Volume 1, Issue 14 - November 17, 2017

Dear Families,

I want to remind you that school will not be in session November 22-24. I hope you can enjoy Thanksgiving with your families and loved ones, I certainly plan to do the same.

I would like to take this opportunity to share with all of you how thankful my family and I are for the warm welcome we have received in this community. I appreciate your emails, phone calls, and conversations where you show genuine interest for how well we are adapting to Columbia, how well my daughter is doing at school (she is a 4th grader at Mill Creek and loves it!), and your worries about how well I can drive with ice on the roads! For those of you that keep asking... At some point I'll sport the Mizzou black and gold, but I am still wearing my Nebraska Huskers red when I have a chance... But I promise I will at some point!

Have a great Holiday!

Shakespeare's Pizza!

Just a reminder that Gentry Middle School and Shakespeare's Pizza have partnered to offer a pizza fundraiser for Gentry students and staff on Friday, December 8th during all student lunches. All pizza is pre-ordered. Please, see the attached form to order pizza for your student if you haven't done it yet!

After School Activity Bus

Beginning after Thanksgiving we will have a new and improved way to sign up for the after school activity bus. We will have a link to the bus sign up form on our website and students will be able to use their iPads to sign up. This means they can sign up at home or at school. No standing in line and waiting for the clipboard! The main thing students must remember is that they still must sign up BEFORE 1:00 pm of the day they want to ride the bus! Students will be instructed at school how to sign up.

Tardy Update

As we continue to monitor the number of tardies our students have to school (1st period) and to their classes (periods 2-8), we will start an attendance plan on November 27th to both teach our students the importance of being on time, and how to organize their day better while at school (and the night before!) to be on time.

Part of that plan are positive reinforcements through different incentives for students. PTSA has graciously agreed to fund the incentives for students.

The last 3 weeks of the semester we will start a competition among grade levels which consists in accumulating the least among of tardies as a grade. The grade level that wins each week will receive a reward during lunch time (every student in that grade!) The winner of the 3 week run will receive cookies in their advisory (again, the entire grade level!) In addition, we will recognize individual students that are on time to all their classes every week!

Please, help our students be on time by bringing them to school before 7:21am (School starts at 7:30am), and by reinforcing the importance of being on time. After all, it is a life skill!

Coats at Gentry

Reminder, per student handbook, coats and hats are not allowed to be worn in the building and must be placed in the students’ locker. If students bring coats or hats to school, which we encourage, we ask them to please place them in their locker. We understand students might want to wear their coats when going out to the trailers, but it takes less than 30 seconds to get from the building door to the classrooms, and the coats are more a disruption carrying them around and taking space in the classrooms and hallways, than help.

As we try to remind you every week, your child will be OK if they are uncomfortable for a few minutes a day. We, as adults, do it all the time!

First Semester Finals - 8th Grade

For your planning, 8th grade students have Final Exams the last week of the semester. This is the anticipated schedule:

Wednesday, December 20th

Math (Part 1)

Social Studies

World Languages (Part 1)

Thursday, December 21st

Math (Part 2)

World Languages (Part 2)

Other courses may have unit test. Teachers will communicate with students and families about it, and we will include it in our weekly communication!

Mental Health Minute

Every month, the Department of Special Services shares information with the CPS staff related to mental health. This month's MHM focuses on Trauma Informed Schools and going back to the WHY students behave the way they do. Take a couple of minutes for this short reading... is worth the time!

Krispy Kreme Fundraiser - Thank You!

We want to thank all our parents that contributed to our PTSA fundraiser by buying donuts (in some cases tons of them!) and volunteering their time to make this effort successful. We are extremely grateful to have such a supportive community!

8th Grade Visit to Rock Bridge and Career Center

Our 8th grade students visited Rock Bridge High School and the Career Center on Thursday, November 16. They had the opportunity to meet Administrators, Teachers, and students, and learn about the amazing opportunities at the Career Center! 8th grade students will visit Rock Bridge again mid January before they enroll in their 9th grade classes.
