Why are so many Indians vegetarians?

Indians are often vegetarians because one of their religions, Brahmin, forbids eating meat. This is because it is considered a sin, which they are supposed to avoid. Also they used to be the religion that advised the ruler about right and wrong, both from a religious view, and a ethical view, this is why it was so important for them to do the right thing, and one of the wrong things just happened to be killing and eating animals.
