A Word From Jo Cullen - Executive Director
A Note From Mr. Jordan - Enrichment Teacher
Running the enrichment program this year has been a first rate experience. Watching each student light up every day as they walk into the classroom is rewarding as a teacher. The goal from day one has been to merge student’s interests and passions with education and hands-on activities.
From a teacher stand point this model has had great success, and after asking students the past couple weeks what their thoughts on enrichment are, it seems they are feeling positive as well. Here are some quotes from students:
“Enrichment is the highlight of my day!”
“I enjoy that every day in enrichment is something different and new.”
“I love the themes that we have in enrichment!”
“Mr. Jordan and enrichment are what I look forward to every morning.”
“Enrichment = fun!”
I am excited to bring the upcoming holiday season into the enrichment program and continue merging student interests with educational experiences!
A Note From Mr. Aaron - Enrichment Teacher
"Being given the opportunity to teach enrichment has been a privilege, one I certainly don’t take for granted. Seeing the kids come in every single day, smiles on, eyes wide and minds open to interactive learning brings so much joy to teaching this class. Enrichment is such a unique program and by that I mean in the given moment, the students sometimes don't realize they are being equipped with unique knowledge and necessary life skills. Like learning how to start a campfire, fix a car or how to make rational decisions. But that's the joy of enrichment, it is limitless learning that takes place in an engaging and interactive environment. Mr. Jordan and I love being able to team up to teach such an amazing group of students and appreciate the support from everyone within the community at Jeremiah School.
This past week specifically, we focused on Halloween and took a closer look at it's origins as well as how it is celebrated in cultures throughout the world. The students displayed a desire to dig deeper during the curriculum and a willingness to try ButterBeer, a butterscotch cream drink. Some students even stepped out of their comfort zone to try it out even if they didn't particularly like it, which was pretty awesome to see."
“I’m so excited for the Harry Potter themed day and can't wait to try ButterBeer” - Jacob
“I knew what other countries/cultures did for holidays like Christmas, but I’ve never learned about how they celebrated fall/halloween before” - Jasmine
A Note About Social Thinking From Ms. Shaunah
I have been so excited about the Social Thinking classes that we are doing here at Jeremiah School this year. Social Thinking was developed by Michelle Garcia-Winner, and is a methodology that is evidenced-based. It seeks to help students learn to be social thinkers and to use their skills appropriately in various social settings. More specifically, social thinking is defined as “the process by which we interpret the thoughts, beliefs, intentions, emotions, knowledge and actions of another person along with the context of the situation to understand that person’s experience.” The Social Thinking curriculum materials take us through parts of communication and conversation, problem solving, emotional regulation, perspective taking, friendship, hidden rules, healthy relationships, social interpretation, and so much more. Our classes have deep discussion on these topics and are afforded the opportunity to practice their skills in class.
Trunk or Treat
Halloween came early to Jeremiah School on Friday, October 29. Students and staff dressed up in some fabulous costumes and enjoyed a day of fun activities. In the afternoon, parents came and treated the students to some amazing Halloween trunks, filled with lots of tasty treats. The parents did a fantastic job decorating their trunks, and although the rain came down just as the students came out, everyone still enjoyed it and had a lot of fun. Huge thanks to all the parents for putting so much effort in and making it such a great afternoon for the students.
