New cyberbullying law
A new State of Michigan cyberbullying law went into effect the week
of March 25, 2019. The article is located below.
The Detroit Free Press summarized the impact in a recent article and LOCS would like to make sure parents share the potential outcomes with their children.
Staying responsible online is a topic we discuss with our students and now there are legal penalties beyond what happens at school. Signed by Governor Whitmer in December 2018, the cyberbullying law involves posting in a “public media forum” intended to put someone
in fear of harm and an intent to commit violence, that there is an expectation that it will be viewed as a threat, and is part of a pattern of harassment/intimidation.
As with all of these emerging technology issues, we appreciate families as partners keeping all of our children safe online. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has more anti-bullying resources on its site for those interested.

Fleece and Thank you
There are many ways for students to participate. If students want to make a blanket, they can stay after school from 2:30-4:30. You can buy a blanket kit to make or bring your own fleece. If you want to help but cannot attend, money to make blankets can be donated and students will get them made. Family members are welcome to join us after school.
If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Kutchen at christine.kutchen@lok12.org.

Positivity Project - Purpose
This strength means that you have beliefs about the meaning of life and your life’s purpose. You seek to be part of something greater than yourself. People who possess a sense of purpose believe that they are somehow connected with humanity or the universe -- and that they were put on earth for a reason. That reason can have all kinds of variety. It could be to create a unique invention, to bring joy through art or music, or to raise their children to become good people. These people have a true calling.

Water polo anyone?
If water polo means swimming with horses, it is time to learn about the sport of WATER POLO! Most often described as a cross between swimming, football, soccer and volleyball, it is a fast paced, fun sport designed to build cooperation and camaraderie. Lake Orion High School has both a boys and girls team, AND students are welcome to join the junior varsity team during their 8th grade year, giving students the opportunity to make friends and get accustomed to the high school before attending school there!
On Wednesday, May 1, during Star, Varsity Water Polo players welcome any interested students to join them in the cafeteria to introduce the sport and answer questions! The team will also be sharing information on a FREE Water Polo Clinic for both boys and girls May 13-17. Look for information to come home with your student! This is a video to show you more about this amazing sport! The team hopes to see your student on Wednesday during Star! (bonus - there will be doughnuts!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X9NkKHYGFTI
8th grade celebration
8th Grade Celebration
Parents: We need your help!
At the end of 8th grade, parents host a celebration after the 8th grade awards ceremony. This year’s event will be held on June 13, 2019, immediately following the ceremony. A group of parents meets about once a month and is working hard to raise money for this event. We’ve received some generous donations and hosted a euchre fundraiser but we still have a ways to go.
CASH DONATIONS
If you have not been able to contribute to this year’s 8th grade celebration in some way, we are asking for a donation of $15, $20, or $25 by May 15th.
Send cash or check payable to Oakview PTO into the school office by Wednesday, May 15th.
Or, use Paypal by sending money to our treasurer at moran2002@outlook.com
Be sure to choose the “friends and family” option when using paypal.
RAFFLE ITEMS
We are looking for donations for the raffle at the end of the celebration. 8th grade students will get tickets and will be able to decide which prizes to try to win. Some examples may be unused gift cards, gift certificates, and other smaller items that are of interest to 8th grade students.
If you are interested in donating, please contact Catherine May or Jillian Chapie
Catherine: catherinemayaudiology@gmail.com or 248-425-4167
Jillian: j2chapie@aol.com or 586-612-1128
GIFT BAG TRINKETS
We are also looking for small items, 208 of them, to be included in the “send off” gift bags. Maybe you have a local business that has extra pens, sunglasses, or other small items that would be of interest to 8th graders. If so, please let us know.
If you are interested in donating something like this, please contact Amy McCaffrey
Amy: gideon1011@yahoo.com or 248-670-4528
*Our next 8th grade celebration committee meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 1st at 7:30pm at the Eagles on Clarkston Rd. We want to ensure that we provide a nice celebration and send off to high school for our 8th grade class!
Thank you!

NOAH food drive
Members of our National Junior Honor Society are spearheading an event for the above organization NOAH. The collection is the week of April 22, 2019.
More than just a lunch, the Bag Lunch Program is the beginning of a relationship. The warm, safe space that is created where people are known by name can start a transformation. Offered Monday through Thursday, the Bag Lunch Program has served the downtown Detroit community for over 40 years.
We set transformation in motion first by welcoming participants to partake in our Bag Lunch Program. This meal is our main engagement strategy, designed to begin an ongoing relationship founded on trust and acceptance. It is open to anyone without qualifications or restrictions.
