A Note From Mr. Gahan
Hello Coralville Central Families and Friends,
The second half of the school year has started off very nicely. Students have been able to persevere through many things this year and they continue to amaze me every day. We are looking forward to watching the kids grow even more over the next couple of months.
Have a wonderful rest of the month and stay healthy!

Message on Masks and Vaccines (9/15/21)
To help slow the spread of COVID-19, the Iowa City Community School District requires universal mask use for all teachers, staff, students, and visitors to our schools, regardless of vaccination status. This is based on guidance from the CDC. In addition, the President’s Executive Order on domestic transportation requires students and staff to wear a face-covering while on a school bus or while utilizing other District-provided transportation.
In addition, our District strongly encourages eligible individuals to get the COVID-19 vaccine. For individuals 12 years of age and older who have not yet received the COVID-19 vaccine, this vaccine locator may be used to find a provider near you.

Word of the month...
This month we have focused on PERSEVERANCE as a whole building.
Has your child come home talking about PERSEVERANCE?
Have you been working on something as a family?
Here is a smart goal sheet you could use to PERSEVERE even at home!
Information on Junior High Registration
Look for further information from the 6th grade teachers.
Martin Luther King Day
On Monday January 17th our building will be closed to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.
Today at school (Jan 10th) each grade level will be focusing on a book about Martin Luther King Jr and making doves to decorate our building.
Each dove will symbolize;
Peace is a mindset.
Peace is a choice.
It shows in your action.
It shows in your voice.
Use these doves as a gentle reminder
To keep peace in your heart,
And help make the world kinder.
Here are some community events around Martin Luther King Jr Day that you could do as a family to celebrate:
Library News!
Hello from the Library and teacher librarian Devin Redmond
As much as I love the school library, I also have a deep love for public libraries. I shed some tears when my daughter, now a 9th grader, got her first library card when she was three.
This past week (or maybe next week in some cases), AIM cards were sent home with your students. Please check backpacks, including its small pockets. This AIM card gives your student limited access to the public libraries. It is small like a credit card and looks like this. It will be wrapped in directions:
This is a fine-free, fee-free student library card called AIM (Access to Information and Materials). You may or may not have already received one. This is just a duplicate. The number on the card is the most important. The card will give your child access to the three local public libraries: Iowa City Public Library, Coralville Public Library, and North Liberty Community Library. Select student information will be shared with the public libraries through secure electronic means. The card will serve to supplement the library materials your child receives from the school district, but offers more access to e-books and audiobooks on Overdrive and Libby.
The AIM card has a more limited scope than a traditional public library card. http://iowacityaimcard.org/Devin Redmond (she/hers)

Nurse News
The CDC released updated COVID-19 quarantine and isolation guidance for K-12 schools. This guidance has also been adopted by IDPH and JCPH. On Monday, January 10, 2022, our District will transition to these updated protocols, which are detailed below. While the CDC has modified quarantine and isolation guidance for schools, we continue to require masks for all students, staff, and visitors to our schools. In addition, we highly recommend that all eligible individuals receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
Individuals who test positive for COVID-19 must follow the below protocols:
· Stay home for five days.
· If you have no symptoms or your symptoms are resolving after five days, you can return to school on day six.
· If you have a fever, continue to stay home until your fever resolves and you have been fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications.
· The same protocols apply for both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals testing positive for COVID-19.
If you have been exposed to a COVID-positive individual in your home and you are fully vaccinated and boosted (for those eligible - the CDC now recommends that adolescents aged 12 to 17 years old should receive a booster shot 5 months after their initial vaccination series), you are not required to quarantine. However, it is recommended that you wear a mask around others for ten days, monitor for symptoms, and be tested for COVID-19 on day five. Unvaccinated individuals who have a household exposure to someone with COVID-19 must follow the below protocols:
· Stay home for five days.
· If possible, take a COVID-19 test on day five.
· If you develop symptoms, get a test and continue to stay home.
· If you have no symptoms after five days, you can return to school on day six.
· Please Note: The above bullets also apply to vaccinated individuals that are eligible for the booster but have not yet received it and those that have not fully completed the initial vaccination process (individuals that have received one of two doses).
Additional COVID testing location:
**We are excited to share that our District has partnered with Nomi Health to offer a drive-through COVID-19 testing site in the Liberty High School parking lot. The site will be open to the public beginning Monday, January 10, 2022. Hours of operation will be Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:30 pm. Appointments can be made by visiting nomihealth.com/iowa/. If you are unable to make an appointment online, you may register at the site. We are hoping to add additional testing sites at two other schools within the next few weeks.**

Snacks & Celebrations
The ICCSD is committed to providing a safe and healthy learning environment for our students. In line with that goal, changes are being made to the district’s Wellness Policy regarding classroom snacks birthday treats, and classroom celebrations.
NO FOOD BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS
In line with the district’s Wellness Policy, student birthdays will be celebrated in the classrooms with a special acknowledgment. Each grade level team has determined a special recognition for students who wish to celebrate their birthdays at school. Please note these birthday celebrations will not involve food. If food is sent to school for birthdays the food items will be returned home.
SNACK & CELEBRATIONS :
When food is served to students in the classroom as a snack or during a classroom celebration, the following rules apply (ICCSD Wellness Policy 507.9):
- allow only fresh fruits/vegetables or purchased foods with the ingredients listed (no homemade foods).
- allow only foods that meet the Healthy Food Guidelines/ Smart Snacks. (the only exception to this would be food-tasting related to district-approved curriculum lessons)
- not allow foods with peanuts or peanut butter or foods that were made in a factory where cross-contamination may occur.
- food that does not meet the guidelines will be sent home.
- a list of acceptable foods (Healthy Food Guidelines/ Smart Snacks) will be made available to parents and teachers at the beginning of the school year.
The ICCSD Wellness Policy Classroom Snacks and Celebrations is a complete list of approved foods including where the approved food items can be purchased.
Masks remain a requirement for all students, staff, and visitors to our schools. In addition, we highly recommend that all eligible individuals receive the COVID-19 vaccine. For individuals that have received the vaccine, we strongly encourage you to get the booster. Boosters are now available for those age 12 and older. For individuals five years of age and older who have not yet received the COVID-19 vaccine, this vaccine locator may be used to find a provider near you.
