A Message from the Principal
“Chag sameach!”
Is this merely the Jewish equivalent of “happy holidays” or does it mean something more?
The Torah tells us with regard to Sukkot (Devarim 16:14-15) “You shall rejoice in your festival…...you will be completely joyous”. It seems like a tall order. How do we make ourselves feel happy, completely joyous for the chag?
Research in the field of positive psychology, suggests that gratitude may be the answer. Dr. Martin E. P. Seligman, a psychologist at the University of Pennsylvania, and father of the field known as positive psychology, found that when participants in a study had to write and deliver a letter of thanks to someone, their happiness scores increased. (See:http://www.health.harvard.edu/healthbeat/giving-thanks-can-make-you-happier)
This, then, may be one way to actualize Hashem’s command to to be joyous on Sukkot. Recognizing that He protects us and that we are blessed to have our families and friends are just two of many things we can recognize as gifts from Hashem that will increase our joy on this holiday of Sukkot.
Perhaps, then, this greeting does more than wish our friends a happy holiday. Perhaps it creates the feeling of community by reminding us that we are all “banim la-Hashem elokeichem,” Hashem’s beloved children, celebrating the joy that comes with recognizing the gifts we receive from Him day in and day out.
At YLS, we begin and end each day with a greeting. We all sit together and welcome or say goodbye to each and every member of our classroom community, students, teachers and staff. Sometimes we do this in song, sometimes by passing along a greeting to practice for the upcoming chag. Each and every time, twice a day, it connects us as one classroom community and reminds us of each individual’s valuable place within it.
Shabbat Shalom and Chag Sameach,
Becky

Learning at the Lab
Take a deep dive into the theory behind teaching and learning at Yeshiva Lab School. Led by Rabbi Perl and Mrs. Troodler the presentation will be interactive and engaging while modeling the pedagogy we use in the class every day. By the end of the evening you’ll have a good understanding of what the Constructivist approach is all about and what you can and should expect from your child as he or she continues on his/her learning journey at Yeshiva Lab School.

Chanukat Habayit- This is NOT an invitation!
Your children have been busy planning a Chanukat Habayit for our learning space. They are creating the invite and this is NOT it. This is not a "parent program" per se, but a student learning experience to which they will invite one special guest from outside the classroom. It will be on Wednesday, October 14 from 8:30am -9:15am.
Below are pictures of our list of student committees and some of the planning that is already underway.
Looking forward to celebrating with you,
The Morot
