NOTRE DAME CATHOLIC PRIMARY SCHOOL
23 June 2022
Dear Parents and Staff
During two beautiful Masses, our Year Four students and some from Years Five and Six made their First Holy Communion over last weekend. The children were all magnificently presented, and it was obvious just how special they felt. I was impressed by their confidence while reading and the reverence that they maintained throughout the services. Thank you to the parents for presenting their children so smartly and to Fr Quynh and the staff who prepared them so well. It was such a pleasure to be able to return to enjoying the celebration without the restrictions of the past few years.
STAFFING UPDATE
There are a few staffing changes that will occur over the next couple of weeks and as next Term commences.
- Mrs Kim Mack is moving to the Library to take over from Mrs Sarah Sarmardin, working Monday to Thursday each week.
- Mrs Mary Evangelista will be moving to Year 2P to take on the position vacated by Mrs Mack.
- Miss Carol Zanlongo will be joining the Year 4M class in an Education Assistant role, replacing Mrs Evangelista.
- An appointment will be made before the end of this Term for an additional Education Assistant to work in Mrs Harland’s Kindergarten class on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
I look forward to working with all who are taking up these positions and wish them happiness and success in their new roles.
SEMESTER REPORTS
The Teachers and Leadership Team have been working hard to have your children’s Reports ready for parents to download from this Friday afternoon at 4.00pm. Please see below for information regarding accessing the reports.
PARENT/TEACHER MEETINGS
Mrs Bradshaw has included, in today’s newsletter, the process for booking meetings with Teachers for the morning of Friday 1 July through the Parent Teacher Online (PTO) link, which is on the school website. These meetings are particularly important as the written Report can only convey some of the information about your child’s progress. Please ensure that you book your time with the Teacher/s so that you are able to be fully aware of their achievements and the ways in which you may support their learning.
KINDERGARTEN
From the commencement of next Term, the access gate on Oswell Street will not be open before and after school. This will release staff so that they can assist with the preparation for the day. Please enter through the main gate or the gate near the Church. These gates will be closed at 8.45am each day and parents/carers will need to enter the school through the office if they arrive after this time.
PYJAMA DAY
TERM DATES
This school Term concludes:
· Next Wednesday, 29 June, for the children in 4YO Kindy.
· Next Thursday, 30 June, for the children in 3YO Kindy and Pre-Primary to Year Six.
· All children are invited to wear neat casual clothes to celebrate the end of Term, except for the Year One and Two Classes who are to wear their sport uniform as they will be attending the Spare Parts Puppetry performance.
SR JOAN BUCKHAM
It was with great sadness that l Iearnt this week of the passing of Sr Joan Buckham RSM who may be known by some members of our community. Sr Joan was a member of the Sisters of Mercy Australia and Papua New Guinea and a stalwart of Catholic Education Western Australia serving in a number of Mercy schools in Western Australia before her appointment as Deputy Director of Catholic Education WA. It was in this role that Sr Joan was instrumental in my first appointment as a Principal and I will be eternally grateful for her wise counsel and support. Sr Joan leaves behind an indelible mark on our system and everyone who knew her. Eternal rest grant unto Sr Joan, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace.
TRAFFIC
I am pleased that the number of parents who continue to break the law by stopping in the street to drop and pick up children appears to have dropped again over the past week. There are still those who do not believe these rules apply to them and continue to put the lives of their children and the children of others at risk. The drive through drop off and pick up zone near the church works very efficiently and is a much safer option. Please use this facility to ensure the safety and peace of mind of all.

YEAR 3 CLASS NEWS
We hit the ground running in Term 2! In Weeks 3, 4, and 5 we participated in our first ever NAPLAN testing. We completed a series of assessments in writing, numeracy, reading and conventions of language. We got to take the tests on our iPads and look forward to seeing our results some time next term.
In writing we have been learning about how to write procedures. We learnt that the instructions in a procedure need to be very specific so that anyone can follow them and know exactly what you mean. We learnt about using adverbs to help with this. A really fun way that we learnt about procedures, was by giving instructions to Miss Horne on how to make fairy bread! We then got a chance to make our own fairy bread and wrote a procedure.
Quotes about making fairybread
I didn’t know how to make fairy bread before that day but I thought it was fun. I didn’t know there was only three simple steps to make it! – Aviana
My favourite part was that we got to make our own fairy bread and eat it. – Leola
I like fairy bread now but I didn’t like it before. I learnt that procedures need to have an aim or a goal. – Inuk
I learnt how to make fairy bread and to spread the butter properly with the knife. I learnt how to cut bread and how to open a loaf of bread in the bag - Xavier
During reading we have commenced a novel study of the book ‘The 52 Storey Treehouse’ by Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton. We have read the chapters independently, to a partner and aloud in groups. Then we completed activities about the book to show our understanding. In technology, we have constructed dioramas depicting our own ‘storey’ of the treehouse. We had so much fun planning, designing, constructing and using our imagination!
In maths we have been learning how to measure. We learnt that mass is weighed in grams and kilograms, capacity in millilitres and litres and length in centimetres and metres. It has been fun learning about maths in such a hands-on way. This term we have also started maths rotations. This is where all the Year 3 join together and are taught different maths topics in groups with Miss Tana, Miss Watkins and Miss Horne.
In art, we have been learning about the contemporary Australian artist Pete Cromer. He is known for his artworks of Australian wildlife which feature bright, bold colours and different textures. We had a go at creating our own dream bird art inspired by him. First we did a directed drawing and then practised blending oil pastels and using the collage technique for the feathers. We think they look fantastic!

Nature Playground Updates
The P&F Executive met with Darryl prior to Tuesday's P&F meeting to discuss the progress of the Nature Play upgrade at Notre Dame. Although the equipment itself is not overly costly, there are also site works required to prepare the area, and a requirement to install soft fall materials under the new equipment. The soft fall itself is $50,000! The P&F has committed funds raised from the Quiz Night and Colour Run in 2021 to go towards these upgrades, and will continue to allocate additional funds when available so this project can commence. Stay tuned for our next fundraiser launching in term 3.
Containers for Change at Notre Dame
