ELA News and Updates
*Scholastic Book Order Code: JQ8XW under Miss Thomas still This week the 6th graders learned about subject-verb agreement and took a quiz. They got to use their notes and their practice problems on the quiz. Those grades will be in the gradebook some time next week. March Madness Book Brackets are underway. Each class has selected the Elite Eight books and next week we will see which books advance to the Final Four. They are really getting into it and some still have perfect brackets! Their spelling unit this week consisted of the suffixes, -ary and -ate. Please remind your child to study these words. They can use the lists on the packet or their pretests to study. These are put into the gradebook as test scores which are 25% of their grade. Studying will really help some of them out. I will be placing another book order before spring break. You can order online or bring the form in to me and I’ll add it to my teacher order. *Scholastic Book Order Code: JQ8XW under my maiden name, Miss Thomas still. The order will be placed by March 31st, so we can get the books before spring break! We will be starting the Forward Exam testing next week Tuesday and Thursday. Make sure your child gets enough sleep, eats breakfast and comes to school those days. They also need to bring their headphones for a portion of the test. Have a great weekend!

Social studies wrapped up chapter 5 this week. We worked on a pretest, a posttest, and put together a study guide. Students also began working on their essay question. They must submit their final essay question answer to Google Classroom by the start of class on Monday. We ended the week with the part of the test that included matching, multiple choice, true/false, and fill in the blank.
Next week we begin Chapter 6. This chapter takes a much closer look at the Revolutionary War and the Patriots fight for independence. Please check Skyward for updated grades. Encourage your son or daughter to complete late or absent work.
Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Have a great weekend.

Music Man Jr. Costumes-Students will need to find their own costume for the musical. I do have some things here at school, but not a lot. The musical takes place in July 1912, victorian edwardian style “titanic-like” clothing and knickers with suspenders are some examples. Rehearsals are running smoothly!! We will start blocking next week. Cast members will need to have their lines memorized by then!!. Rehearsals are every Tuesday, Thursday and every other Friday. It is very important that your child be present during these times!!
.
Solo & Ensemble is Saturday March 25th from 8am-12pm. Students continue to work on their pieces and should sign up for individual practice times with me weekly.
If you are looking for extra handouts, forms, etc. please check my website. I try to post everything I can so you have access at home!!! http://yorkvillemusic.weebly.com
Art
Students are finishing up their extreme close up eye of a creature. The students used stippling on shrink film which were then put in the toaster oven and shrunk to ¼ of their original size! Students were amazed at the shrinky-dink process! Now, the eyes are glued to a scratch board and students will use a stylus to remove the top layer of black paint and reveal the color beneath to complete their creature.
