11/20/20
Dear Families,
I love Thanksgiving. Being around family, enjoying delicious food, and reflecting on all our incredible blessings really nourishes the soul. Of course, like many of you, I will not be traveling or hosting extended family this year. While this is a little heartbreaking, I am deeply grateful to have such a wonderful family and I know it will be all the sweeter when we can be together again.
It is easy to list the dozens (hundreds? millions?) of things that have been brutally hard in 2020, but I’m challenging myself and you, if you’re willing, to find the things about which we can be grateful this Thanksgiving season. I’ll start with our school:
Students: They are truly the joy of our everything. We love the wonder in their eyes and the excitement in their success. They seem to like it here too. Yesterday, when asked what he is grateful for, one of our first graders wrote, “this school.” I agree!
Teachers and Support Staff: I am in awe of their dedication, tenacity, and sheer strength of character amid this ever-changing educational landscape….honestly, not even Gumby is more flexible than educators right now. They are all working harder than you can imagine.
Parents/Guardians: Without your support and partnership, schooling would be simply impossible this year. Thank you also for your grace; we know you’re seeing a lot more than usual. Try to imagine having to live-stream your son’s Zoom birthday party.
Fellow Administrators and School Committee: These are often thankless jobs and, in the case of the School Committee, a volunteer job! I am grateful to work alongside such thoughtful, committed, and supportive colleagues and leaders all trying to do what is best for our students and staff.
PTO: First, thank you for all the ways you support us. We have especially appreciated the dinner specials! We also had the best turnout, maybe ever, for a PTO meeting last month.
Hybrid: Sure, we’d rather be altogether, but we have been in school for 45 days now and I am so grateful we were able to bring so many students back in person, even if it's just 2 days per week.
Video Conferencing: Okay, this is a bit of a blessing and a curse, but it has been an invaluable way to stay connected and continue learning.
Small Class Cohorts: Having 12 students in a classroom at a time has its perks.
Under-Scheduling: For years, children have been so over-scheduled with athletics and music and tutoring and play dates, but now they have much more freedom to just be. Teachers have commented that, for many, this has had a positive effect.
Food Pantry: There is a lot we can’t do this year, but I’m so grateful that we are still supporting our local Food Pantry.
Early Release Days: Having these afternoons every Wednesday are invaluable to teachers because everything they are doing this year takes exponentially more time to achieve. Of course, they’ve spent the last several with you, which is also important.
There is a lot to lament this year to be sure, but there are rays of sunlight too. Speaking of sunlight, we’ve had a great weather fall! Ask your kids; they’ll find the bright sides and enlighten us all.
Happy Thanksgiving Week!
Best,
Annette Doyle

COVID-19 Travel Advisory
As SPS families plan for the upcoming Thanksgiving break, please carefully consider travel as it could potentially impact our school community and our ability to have students remain with in-person learning.
Massachusetts residents are urged against traveling out-of-State
If you travel to a higher-risk state, a molecular diagnostic COVID-19 PCR test result is required upon your return to MA. A rapid test or a serology test will not be accepted. Documentation of results must be submitted to your school nurse before your child can return to school.
The MA Travel Order requires a 14 day quarantine period upon your return unless you have a negative PCR Covid-19 test result. We recommend quarantining and testing on day 3-5 of your return in order to detect possible exposure that may have occurred during the travel period.
The MA Travel Order is for anyone entering Massachusetts from out-of-State and includes Massachusetts residents returning from second homes or weekend trips to any state not considered to be lower-risk.
As of November 20, 2020 the current list of Lower-Risk States Includes:
Vermont
Hawaii
*Maine & New Hampshire will be high-risk effective November 21, 2020
Rhode Island and Connecticut are currently listed as Higher-Risk States
Please refer to this link as you make travel plans as it is continues to be updated by the State of Massachusetts: Link to List of Lower Risk States
