Family Advisory Panel Meeting Minutes
February 13, 2024
Attendees: Kristen, Sabrina, Jennifer, Timothy, Amy, Lynne Heinzelman, and Dr. Cutler
I. Introduction from Lynne
a. This Just In (monthly updates)
b. Message from Dr. Cutler
c. Lynne wants to involve families in the updates – pictures and experiences from field trips and events, special updates, student highlights.
d. Monthly topic: Jen Bock – state testing
II. Discussion about Testing and Family Concerns
a. WIVA is the largest virtual school in Wisconsin
b. Test results go onto the state report card – participation is really important so that administrators can tell where students meet expectations and where the growth areas are
c. Many parents are concerned about having their kids test in unfamiliar locations with people that they don’t know.
d. Dr. Cutler is working with state legislators on bills (Assembly Bill 652 and Senate Bill 611) that will allow remote proctoring. She encourages families with these concerns to talk to their own local representatives. There will be a group of 8th graders (?) who will pilot remote testing in the near future.
e. Is there a consequence for refusing to do the testing? No….but the numbers are important to WIVA.
III. Family Council Concerns and Topics
a. Concern about how to get disengaged students to do their work
b. Parents looking for ideas on what to do with “bored” students
c. More talk about how to best utilize the Facebook page (for parents) and how to promote the social media pages of WIVA (TikTok, Instagram, Facebook)
d. Tim gave a report about the EAA museum fieldtrip and he will provide pictures for the advisory meeting
e. What is the chain of command? Erin Haugom will follow up with this. Family Council members will encourage families to contact their principals and Dr. Cutler with concerns that go unresolved. We will look for a spreadsheet with contact information
f. Family Council members will attend the School Board meeting on Thursday 2/15/24 and Amy will present what the Council action items are
i. How to engage more parents and increase participation
ii. We are restructuring the Family Council and working on identifying our role and purpose within WIVA
IV. Reminders:
