Week at a Glance
Marian Central Catholic High School Faculty Newsletter
November 4, 2017
Well, we have finally completed all outstanding exams and honor roll lists are being calculated! Thank you all for working so hard to get the make up exams completed and securing the first quarter grades.
Since we have two full weeks down, there should be at least 3 or 4 grades inputted in each of your gradebooks. In addition, I cannot emphasize enough that the students should be allowed an opportunity to correct formative assessments, as this is when they are forming their understanding about the material. Correcting the material forces them not only to improve their formative grade, but also causes them to revisit the material and strengthen/enforce their understanding prior to a summative where they have to show mastery of that material. It is, of course, understandable that you place certain restrictions on this, including no corrections on late assignments, or capping the possible revised grade to a certain percentage. This would be up to your discretion, however, you really need to make sure that your policies are clear for your students. Thank you for continuing to service our students.
A big thank you to teachers as Mrs. Loy and Ms. Novy may have already stepped into your classrooms for informal or formal observations. The more the students see administration in the classes, the less disruptive it will become for them... and hopefully for you. We have seen some interesting lessons as well as some creative teaching strategies. As for the piloting of the Diocesan Evaluation tool as well as using the online Evaluwise program, we need your help. Please share any input you have on either tools as you experience them. You can submit feedback anonymously on this form. Your feedback will be valuable in refining the tool and process prior to it being rolled out to the rest of the Diocesan schools in the next two years.
Msgr. Heinz from St. Joseph in Richmond really delivered a wonderful message to our Marian family this past Wednesday for All Saints Day. Students and Staffulty were on the edge of their seats listening to his message. Hopefully his message resonated with all of us as we continue to "Strive to be Holy" and become a "Hurricane for our Faith."
Remember... Open House is this Sunday!
Here are some links that you should be aware of:
- Open House Agenda & Contest Descriptions: Ms. Loy will be placing a hard-copy of this in your mailboxes too. Please take a few minutes to read through it to understand how you can help participate in the contests.
- Open House Staffing Spreadsheet: Please make sure that you are at school and prepared at your station(s) ready to go! Thank you.
Looking ahead...
Conference Scheduling is open!
- The Conference Scheduling portal continue to be open for parents through Nov. 7.
- You will be able to see and print off your conference schedule after Nov. 7 at 3 pm so you can prepare. If you want to run progress reports in preparation for meeting the families, please follow these directions.
- Conferences will be 8am-11am, 12pm-4pm, and 5pm-8pm on Friday, Nov. 10
- There are 10 minute slots in which the parents have the opportunity to talk with you about how their student is progressing in your class. It is always a great idea to invite your students to join their parents at conferences, as it is about their education, isn't it?
- In appreciation for all the tireless effort you will put in that day, please accept this invitation so you can keep up your energy for the long day!
- Remember, if you anticipate a difficult conference and would like Administrative representation during that conference time, please notify us so we can arrange to have one of us come join you for that conference.
This Tuesday is Late Start!
Please click here for the agenda. Late start will begin directly in your Department PLC rooms this month. Department Heads, please include attendance in your PLC minutes. There is a lot to work on! Also, we have no topics for our Tech Tidbit time! If you have a suggestion for what technology information you want direction on, please email Mrs. Loy or Ms. Novy. Also, if you have a great technology tool that you want to share with the rest of the Staffulty, let us know! Late Starts would be a great chance for you to share it... we have a lot of teacher-experts hidden within our school walls! Time to share what you know! Thanks!
Several members of the Technology Committee will be leaving Late Start meetings early in order to go visit St. Francis in Wheaton. There, teachers will watch a Microsoft laptop in action in the various departments. Please excuse Mr. Winkelman, Mr. Liggett, Mr. T. Lalor, and Mr. Wyckoff, as they will be meeting in the commons at 8:30 am for departure to St. Francis.
There will be several fall sports awards events throughout this week to celebrate the successes of our athletes. Tri-M Inductions will also be on Wednesday evening at 7 pm in the Auditorium.

Key Club Toy Drive Coming!
November 6: Toy Drive Information will be to Period 1 classes
The Key Club is encouraging each 1st period class to "Be Santa" for children participating in the Chicago Area Spina Bifida Association's annual Christmas party. Whatever toys we cannot collect at MC, we are requesting our two local Kiwanis clubs to help us with. Each class will be asked to donate two $10 toys and 4 $1 toys. All the toys must be latex free, as many spina bifida patients have latex allergies.
Information will be dropped off to all first period teachers the morning of November 6th, and then our announcements will explain the process.
November 15: Toy Drive concludes: pick up all toys from classrooms
Key Club students will pick up all donations from classes after school on November 15.
Then, on December 2nd, 20-25 Key Club students will attend the Chicago Area Spina Bifida Association's annual Christmas Party and help Santa pass out the Christmas gifts.
Teachers... please encourage all students to spread a little cheer to other children through this wonderful organization!
Good luck at State, Ryan Jones!
