This Week’s Tiger Tuesday Winners
Second Step lesson focus this week
Today’s lesson focused on the skills of being assertive and identifying/understanding feelings. Key parts of the lessons are:
• Assertive communication is the best way to ask for help
• Clues in faces, bodies, and situations help you notice and understand how people are feeling
• It is possible to have more than one feeling at the same time
Families can support their children at home by discussing when and how they ask for help. Are you at a restaurant and need ketchup for your fries? Do you get the wrong order and need to speak to the server? Being assertive and speaking up for what you need is a life skill. Practice with your family giving scenarios and then identify who to ask for help.
Unit Notes
Unit A
Next Friday is our first Munch-n-Read of the school year. We invite parents, grandparents, or another loved adult to join us in reading on Friday, October 6 from 1:50-2:20. Younger siblings who enjoy books are welcome to join us as well. Please bring a healthy (non-messy) snack and good books to share. Munch-n-Read is the first Friday of each month. Dates will be in the Ridgeway RAP as they approach. Last year we met outside, but this year we will move inside our classrooms to read. At 1:50 you will enter our school through the front door, go to the office to sign in, and wait until your child’s classroom teacher is ready to invite you in. Please do not park in front of the school. Munch-n-Read will end promptly at 2:20, and we will ask you to leave so we can prepare for dismissal.
Also, Unit A is very excited for our first field trip of the year on Wednesday, October 12 to Lloyd's Family Farm. An information form is coming home in your child’s Friday Folder this week. If you indicated interest in attending a field trip on our visitor/volunteer form, a Chaperone slip is coming home as well. If you missed the visitor/volunteer information, please go the Ridgeway Home Page and click on the October 16 RAP.
Unit B
Unit B goes to library check out on the following days:
- Tuesday - Knutson
- Wednesday - Malloy
- Thursday - McCoy
- Friday - Rice
Please check your scholar's Friday folder for homework, a parent letter, and a second steps home link. Things are getting batty in Unit B, ask your scholar about it!
Unit C
In Science, Unit C students went on an awesome (and very wet) field trip to the Missouri River last Friday. We are studying how animal and plant adaptations help them survive, grow and/or reproduce. On our field trip, we got to see these plant and animal adaptations in action!
From the Health Room
Look for important information in Friday Folders from the Health office!
If you have not sent in a Flu vaccine consent form look for a copy in your scholar's Friday Folder. Please sign and return by October 10 if you want your child to participate. If you need more information look for a note from Nurse Julie Roberts at the end of this RAP.
Mistaken Identity!!! It’s never too late or too early to teach your children the basics of poison prevention. Magnets with Look-a-Likes poision information is in Friday Folders. Share with a neighbor or friend if your family received more than one magnet. Knowledge increases by sharing!
Specialist News
Hello Ridgeway Families,
I am so excited and grateful to be a part of Ridgeway Elementary and to serve as your school counselor!
The counseling program at RWE is here to help students focus on strengths and wellness while addressing personal, social/emotional, and academic needs. Feel free to contact me at any time for parent consultation if you have any concerns for your student in these areas so we can work together for student success. I work closely with students, teachers, and families to help promote success at school and address needs. The counseling program can provide crisis intervention for grief or mental health issues and referral. The comprehensive counseling program is for all students and addresses the areas of academic, personal/social-emotional, and career growth through individual counseling, small groups, and in class curriculum/counseling twice per month.
In the Classroom - Twice per month counselor lessons focus on:
- Friendship/social skills, listening skills, assertiveness, communication skills
- Goal setting, executive functioning, study skills, and career exploration
- Respect, diversity, strengths, kindness, and empathy
- The brain: its function in learning, perseverance, and growth mindset
- Decision making, anger management, coping skills for stress, problem-solving, and asking for help
- Safety and the Ways to Stay Safe, recognizing what is safe and how to refuse unsafe situations and reach out to an adult for help, abuse prevention, recognizing and response to bullying
- Children’s literature, language arts, discussion, role-play, games, activities, and utilizing resources in technology
Small groups - Small group counseling is educational in nature and offers students a chance to experience activities and learning in a smaller group environment that focuses on skill building, strengths, building relationships, and experiencing connection with others. Permission slips are required for your student to participate. Some topics that may be addressed in small groups may include new student groups, friendship/ social skills, conflict resolution, resiliency, study skills, self-control/calm, handling worries, grief, kindness outreach, and more.
I am also available for individual counseling sessions. (Permission is required after three sessions). Individual counseling can include weekly or bimonthly visits where students have a solution-focused place to address their concerns or needs and offer a listening ear to process thoughts and emotions with a focus on strengths and goals. Counseling may include using art, bibliotherapy, sensory-based activities, discussion, and role play for skill building. Individual counseling addresses issues of personal, friendship/social skills, family changes, grief, self-esteem, self control, study skills, decision making, and more.
I am looking forward to working with the students and families of Ridgeway! Feel free to call or make an appointment to visit. I encourage you to work closely with us for your child’s growth in learning. Through the counseling program, it is my hope that your child will develop their strengths and a lifetime love of learning.
Please contact me anytime! (573) 214-3550 option 3 or ext. 59003 or email: eryberg@cpsk12.org
Sincerely,
Beth Ryberg, M.Ed., LPC

From Nurse Julie Roberts
Dear Parents/Guardians:
The 2022-2023 injectable Influenza vaccine (flu shot) will be given free of charge to students at Ridgeway on Friday, October 28, 2022. Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services will be on-site to administer the vaccine in the Media Center. This opportunity to have your child vaccinated is strongly encouraged, but it is NOT mandatory.
For your child to be vaccinated, the 2022 Influenza “Flu” Vaccine School-Based Clinic Consent Form must be:
● FULLY completed and SIGNED by the parent or legal guardian
● Completed for EACH CHILD (you must return a separate form for each child you want to be vaccinated)
● Returned to your school nurse by October 10
The injectable flu vaccine (flu shot) is the only type of flu vaccine that will be offered. FluMist nasal spray will not be given this season. The Vaccine Information Statement for the flu shot can be found at: http://www.immunize.org/vis/. You may also contact your school nurse or Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services for Vaccine Information Statements.
If you decline or do not return the required permission form to the school, the free flu vaccine will not be given to your student at school.
If you return the consent form, and your child receives the flu vaccine elsewhere, it is important that you notify your school nurse immediately. This will prevent your child from receiving an unnecessary second dose of vaccine.
Boone County’s free flu vaccine program is made possible by the generosity of the MU Children’s Hospital.
These organizations are funding free flu shots for all Boone County children age 6 months – 18 years of age. Children who do not get the vaccine at school may receive free flu shots at the health department clinic, 1005 W. Worley St. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 573-874-7356.
If you have any further questions, please contact your school nurse.
