News from Mrs. Hilcher- Principal of Grapevine Elementary

Week of April 11-15

Parent Survey

In 2013, the Texas Legislature passed House Bill 5 (HB 5), which made significant changes to curriculum and graduation requirements, as well as, the assessment program and accountability system. In addition to the new graduation requirements, HB 5 also includes a requirement for school districts to conduct a community or parent engagement survey and report results to the Texas Education Agency (TEA). The information collected in this survey will help us highlight areas of excellence, as well as recognize areas of growth as we strive to Build Excellent Schools Together.

The survey link included in this message may be used multiple times in the instance that you have students on different campuses and will be active from April 11 through May 6, 2016. Once you click on the link, you may select if you would like to complete the survey in English or Spanish.

Click here to take the HB 5 survey: http://www.k12insight.com/GCISD/ParentEngagementSurvey/2016.html

I want to thank you for your participation in this survey and your continued support of Grapevine Elementary School and GCISD.

Dismissal Reminders

Over the past few weeks, we have welcomed in spring weather which necessitates sending some reminders for after school dismissal procedures. Please utilize the front & back car lines whenever possible.

If you are walking to meet your student(s):

  • Please meet your child at the designated walker stations
  • Please do not walk your dogs on campus. We have numerous issues with students petting dogs and not paying attention to their ride home. As friendly as your dogs may be, surrounding them with 20+ little people and attention can cause them to act in unpredictable ways. We don't want anyone to get hurt or bit. We also have many students with pet allergies and need to be mindful of their health while they are at school. Feel free to meet your children at the Hughes or Hall-Johnson crosswalks with your pet.
  • Utilize crosswalks when crossing campus driveways and surrounding streets
  • After school, the small playground is for KidzU use only after school. Feel free to play on the large playground instead.
If you are driving to pick up your student(s):
  • Please follow all traffic and school zone laws
  • Refrain from using your cell phone while in a school zone
  • Take turns when turning into the school driveways
  • Yield to pedestrians and buses
  • Load students quickly and carefully pull away from the curb when able

If you choose to drive and park to pick up your student:

  • Please cross the crosswalk and meet your child in the lines where they wait
  • As of Monday, 4/11, we will no longer allow any students to cross the front driveway, or the back loop to the parking lot, without an adult accompanying them.
  • Students can safely cross the crosswalk with the adult who is picking them up
  • Park in designated spaces only. Please honor all PTA reserved parking signs.

We appreciate your support as we work to safely dismiss 520 students each day! If we all work together, we can make dismissal a safe and more efficient process.

Windows of the World: Celebration of Diversity

Grapevine Elementary will be celebrating the various cultures we have in our community with a look into the Windows of the World. The entire school will be participating in this event and we need your help! If you would like to volunteer your time and talents to help us plan this event and/or if you are interested in showcasing your country of origin or heritage, please respond by returning the form attached to this email or via email to kbowie_01@icloud.com by April 15th, 2016.

*Each participant will setup a booth/table to showcase their heritage by displaying things from their country/culture. Each station can incorporate a trifold board with basic information and pictures of the country or culture. We encourage you to make it fun, display special artifacts, make a sample food dish, or wear traditional clothing that represents your culture!

The celebration will be held Thursday, April 21, 2016 at 6:30pm in the GESl cafeteria. We look forward to having as many participate in some capacity as possible. We encourage our kids to embrace their differences and celebrate what makes them unique. This event will allow them to explore those differences in a fun and exciting way. This will be an interactive session for the kids as well. As they visit each country/heritage they will get a stamp on their “Passport to Windows of the World!” So join in the fun and share your experiences!

Pennies for Patients

We are excited to announce our 2nd annual service learning project benefiting The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society sponsored by the GES Student Council and National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS). Our Pasta for Pennies/Pennies for Patients program helps to fund lifesaving blood cancer research and helps children and adults going through treatment right now.

Dates: 4/14/2016 to 4/22/2016

School online giving page: http://events.lls.org/pages/ntx/GrapevineElementarySchool

To get started, we are encouraging students and parents to set up their individual online giving page, which is new this year! Our coin boxes allow students to collect dollars and spare change, while the online giving page allows friends and family near and far to support our students’ service, as well as raise awareness for the work of LLS. Some exciting benchmarks (online giving specific – see attached flyer for details): oStudents who raise $50 receive a Tshirt oStudents who raise $100 receive a MobiMate Bear oStudents collecting $500 receive a letter of recommendation This is also a friendly classroom competition. The top earning class will receive an Olive Garden pasta party. We encourage you to register your student under their classroom teacher’s online giving page.

STEPS:

  • Go to our school’s weblink (above)
  • Click on “Join your classroom team” or “Join your school team” on the right hand barker and follow prompts
  • Search for classroom teacher’s name or subject/grade level
Help LLS and Grapevine Elementary School reach our goal of $2,016 by collecting change!

If there are any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your school coordinator or Michael Iyescas, Student Series Campaign Manager, at Michael.Iyescas@lls.org. Thank you for helping to create a world without blood cancers. The cures of someday are truly reaching the market today!

Sincerely,

Information From Mrs. Horn

Snack Donations Needed

For some of our families, providing a nutritious snack each day to assist their GES star’s performance throughout the day does not happen consistently because of food insecurities. If you are able, please donate individually packaged Goldfish or pretzels in order to help us provide that snack for students that arrive at school without it because of the insecurities. This would not pertain to students that simply forgot a snack that day. If your Star forgets his/her snack often, sending multiple days worth of snacks might help. For questions, please feel free to contact Angela Horn at angela.horn@gcisd.net or 817-251-5740. Thank you for your continued generosity and thoughtfulness.

Rachel's Challenge Rally

This Friday, April 15th will be “Team Up Against Bullying” at GES. In support of our Rachel’s Challenge Rally on Saturday, April 16th from 8 a.m. until 12 noon, please wear your favorite sports team shirt on April 15th. If your class has the most attendance at the rally, Mrs. Horn has a special prize waiting! Students will need to submit a ticket into the GES box at the Rachel’s Challenge Rally in order to count toward the class attendance. Please see the flyer included for registration information.

IF you would like to volunteer for the event, we could always use more hands! Here is the link to sign up: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/70A0E4EADA62EA02-rachels2
