This Week at MHS

Here's what is happening November 2nd-6th

MHS Parents and Students,

We have reached the month of November!

This serves as a final reminder to parents of 12th graders: the TN Promise Scholarship application deadline is quickly approaching-November 2, 2020. All seniors are encouraged to apply for this scholarship. The TN Promise is a last dollar award and fully covers the cost of tuition and mandatory fees at a community college or TCAT location (within the state of TN) for two years. Students can apply online at Once an applicant successfully submits the TN Promise application, he or she should receive an email to the address provided on the TN Promise application. Students should hold onto this email for their records! If your child does not apply for TN Promise by November 2, 2020 at midnight, he or she will be permanently ineligible to receive the scholarship.

Our scholarship page on the School Counseling Canvas website is up and running! Seniors can click the "scholarships" tab and then search for potential scholarships by due date. Please note that the East Tennessee Foundation Scholarship Application will go live on November 1, 2020. The East Tennessee Foundation Scholarship Program requirements range from financial need to scholastic achievement. Most of these scholarships have a due date of February 15. Go to for more information.

General Admission Tickets for this Friday's football game against Science Hill will go on sale Tuesday morning on All tickets for playoffs game will all be sold electronically the week of the game. All tickets are for general admission and no specific seat in the stands. We ask all fans to simply sit in a set that is not taped off in yellow and black. Best of luck to our Rebel Team as they enter this first round of the playoffs!

Wishing you a great week!

Reminder - it is expected that all students will wear face coverings before school, during passing periods, at break, and any other times that social distancing cannot occur.

Any student/family (whether traditional, hybrid or digital right now) who wishes to begin the second semester as a digital or hybrid student MUST contact your school counselor by 3pm on Tuesday, November 24th. If we do not hear from your family by this date and time we will move forward as though your student(s) will be served in the traditional format. This ensures enough time to make any necessary changes to student and teacher schedules prior to Winter Break. Please remember that in the second semester (January through May), the only opportunity to make a change from digital to hybrid or vice-versa will be at Spring Break. Students will be expected to remain in their chosen mode of instruction for a complete nine weeks.

Senior parents: Isn't it hard to believe that your child is already a quarter of the way through his/her senior year of high school? College application season is here, and MHS school counselors want to remind you about some important processes and deadlines.

  • Complete the FAFSA to receive financial aid like HOPE, TN Promise, and others.
  • Complete the TN Promise Application by 11/2/20 to be eligible for two year's tuition free at a community college/technical school.
  • If you intend to apply to UT Knoxville, the priority deadline for applications is Nov. 2.
  • Once applications are submitted be sure to list your colleges in SCOIR under "Applied" to have official documents submitted. Here is a helpful video that walks you through the steps of using Scoir to request documents: Scoir Process
  • In your SCOIR account, be sure to add your personal email address under "Personal Details" in your profile and verify it. That allows colleges to connect your information more quickly.

Governor's School

A reminder to parents of 10th and 11th graders that TN Governor's School applications are now available. The TN Governor’s Schools provide 11 challenging and high-intensity programs which are hosted at area colleges for a short time during the summer. To learn more about Governor's School, visit the MHS Daily Announcements page or the School Counseling Canvas page. The deadline to submit applications to guidance is Friday, November 13.

College representatives will start visiting MHS after Labor Day. In our current time, these interactions will be mostly virtual. Upcoming college representative visits are listed on our daily announcements, in the MHS School Counseling 20-21 Canvas page and on your child's SCOIR dashboard. To protect privacy, we will not be publicly posting Zoom links for rep visits.

If your child wants to "meet" with the rep virtually, they have two options to do so.

  1. He/she can come to the library conference room during break on the date of the visit. School counselors will be there and will host the rep virtually with a group of students.
  2. Students can RSVP to the specific visit within the SCOIR platform. The morning that the visit is set to take place, we will email the Zoom code to your son or daughter.

Wednesday, November 4: University of Alabama at Birmingham (virtual)
