A Note from Mr. Bender

Dear Families,

Read Across America is March 1-5! During this week we celebrate our love of reading along with Dr. Seuss’ birthday. We are looking forward to our students and teachers dressing up during Read Across America week. Please see below for the daily dress-up themes. We hope both digital and in-person students will participate in this fun week of reading!

Also, don’t forget that Tuesday, March 2 is a Digital Learning Day. This will be an asynchronous day of learning for all students. There will not be any Zoom sessions or live teaching on March 2nd. Teachers will check their email periodically throughout the day to answer questions. Lunch pick-up will still be available in the car rider lane from 11:30-12:30.

Finally, Reading Rewards logs are due by Monday, March 1st. Don't forget to submit your completed log to your teacher or on eCLASS.

Enjoy your weekend!

Mike Bender

You are an important partner with your child’s teacher, whether your child is learning at home or at school. To help you support your child’s learning, GCPS is launching a new initiative called AKS at Home. With this project, families will learn ways to help their child practice skills they are learning in class as part of the district’s Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS) curriculum. Parents have access to a library of recorded sessions and tipsheets. Find more information on the AKS at Home web page. **NEW DATES FOR SECOND SEMESTER HAVE BEEN ADDED!**

Character Word of the Month: Cooperation

Big picture

The character trait for the month of March is Cooperation. We define cooperation as working together to get something done. Kids practice this when they are working together on a group project, reading a book, or completing an assignment together. Teachers will choose one student in their class that exhibited cooperation the most for the month of March to represent their class as the Cub of the Month.

Kindness Week

Thanks for participating in Kindness Week! We are looking forward to picking winners on Monday for our Scavenger Hunt. Be sure to have your student submit their Scavenger Hunts by today, Friday, February 26th.

Reading Rewards

The goal of our Reading Rewards program is to help students develop a consistent habit of reading. The monthly requirement is to read, outside of school hours, at least 20 minutes a day for at least 20 days of the month. Students are expected to list book titles and minutes read on each of the 20 dates that are logged on the form. Parents must initial each of the entry dates.

For students to be recognized, the reading log must be turned in on time and considered complete. Students can complete and submit a paper or digital log. The digital log can be found on the school home page of eCLASS. The digital log is an editable pdf file that can be downloaded and saved to your computer at home. Once complete the digital log is submitted as an eCLASS assignment.

All February Reading Rewards logs will be due on or before Monday, March 1. Reading logs can be turned into your teacher anytime you have finished the requirements! No logs should be received before the 21st of each month.

If you have any questions about the Reading Rewards program, please email

Georgia Picture Book Nominee Spotlight: "Small World"

Small World

Written by Ishta Mercurio and illustrated by Jen Corace

When Nanda is born, the whole of her world is the circle of her mother’s arms. But as she grows, the world grows too. It expands outward- from her family, to her friends, to the city, to the countryside. And as it expands, so does Nanda’s wonder in the underlying shapes and structures patterning it: cogs and wheels, fractals in snowflakes. Eventually, Nanda’s studies lead her to become an astronaut and see the small, round, shape of Earth far away.
