We love good news and figured you love good news too!
Excelling Through Struggles
Focused on School
She is obviously focused and concentrating on her computer lesson!
Of our 12 girls, one, Darsy, is in the University in Juticalpa. Perla, Iris and Cata are home-schooling, being too old to attend their grade-level, but they are learning fast and increasing in grade level to be able to actually attend the school. This is an important goal of ours and theirs. The other eight girls are Genesis, 8th grade, Ricci, 7th grade, Dania, Sinthia and Nora, 4th grade; Nazareth and Oneyda, 2nd grade and Steysi – 1st grade. We are proud of the educational accomplishments of these girls. They work hard and the house parents are capable tutors! They are now able to attend their school about 30 minutes from home. It has separate grades and teaches English, music and sports.
Gualaco School
The pictures below are of a school in Gualaco. As you can see from the pictures, it is in abysmal shape. Honduras educates its children grades 1 – 6 in one room with one teacher, bless her heart. We believe that education is the way out of poverty. You can see how the poor condition of this school contributes to poor attendance, etc. In consideration of being a good neighbor, good will and providing adequate education as we are able, we want to refresh this school, fix up the building, add electricity, desks and supplies to entice teachers and enable students to grow educationally. It is our hope also that students to which we are providing scholarships who want to become teachers, will stay in Gualaco and become part of this solution.
Feeding Families
This year we were able to send a 20’ container of 450,000 meals to Honduras to feed the thousands of people who lost nearly everything in the two hurricanes that came through last year. The meals were freeze-dried by Breedlove in Lubbock, Texas. Our team met the container at the port, brought it to Gualaco where it was unloaded at the church compound. Then the work began, carrying the food to the people over land and washed out rivers. The preachers in each village helped distribute the many bags of food. Another container of these meals is on the way. How thankful we are to have the ability to provide such simple provisions for so many!
Esperanza Viva
Next on our list of things to get done is Lynn's House, the second Girls’ Home on the campus of Esperanza Viva.
Julia's house will be finished this summer, It is a duplex style that will initially house 12 girls and then we’ll finish out the other half for 12 more!
We are extending Julia's house to include an Education Building. It will have computer access, a library, a bathroom and lots of room for the girls to study.
SUMMER 2021
This summer we have three groups from Abilene Christian University coming to help. The first is a group of five engineers with two instructors who will put in the septic tank for Julia’s House.
The second is a group of six nursing students with two instructors. They will go to each village to do educational classes with the men and women. We suspect they will do more actual nursing: wound care, infection, medication, etc. than they realize. Their presence provides impromptu learning for these students and much needed care for the village people.
The third group is two girls and one guy for a two month internship in missions. They will quickly immerse in the Honduran life and be able to fill needs.
All of this is a part of ACU’s WAM (Wildcat Academics on Mission), an integrated approach to incorporating mission and service into academic degree plans. We surely are the beneficiaries of such a great program!
WHAT DO WE NEED
- To accomplish these good plans, we do need your support both in prayer and materials: School supplies – we can buy them there which is much easier than carrying suitcases and full boxes.
- Library books in Spanish (Half-price books is a great resource)
- Medical supplies – the clinics in Gualaco are woefully short on all kinds of med supplies: bandaids, Over The Counter meds (not liquid), toothbrushes, toothpaste. We have 2 clinics in Gualaco who help our folks and it would be great to replenish their supplies.
Extra Thoughts
One idea for this year is Mother’s Day, which is coming soon. You might want to honor your mother this year by contributing to a worthy cause.
In all ways, our deepest appreciation to you for your interest, prayers and any gifts you can give. Because of you, this work flourishes and God is Praised!
“Inasmuch as you did this for these, you did it unto me!” I love those words of Jesus and it motivates me to do more!
