Citizens Shall Rule the Government

Thesis

Citizens should be allow to make their own rules, they would have more freedom and be able to express themselves more easily without having the government controlling their whole life.

Summary

In "Harrison Bergeron" By Kurt Vonnegut and "The Lottery" By Shirley Jackson both represent traditions and laws that are inhumane to the citizens there, they are also obligated to do things they'd rather much not do. Harrison was forced to hide his intelligence and appearance in order for other people to feel equal. While in "The Lottery" shows how people are forced to throw in somebody from their family to be stoned to death.

Quote and Analysis

Harrison Bergeron:

"And George, while his intelligence was way above normal, had a little mental handicap radio in his ear. He was required by law to wear it at all times. It was tuned to a government transmitter. Every twenty seconds or so, the transmitter would send out some sharp noise to keep people like George from taking unfair advantage of their brains" (Vonnegut 1).

Analysis:

This helps by showing how the government controlled his whole life. Harrison was smarter than all the other citizens, making the government be able to control his life. The transmitter hurt Harrison by sending sharp noises through his ear, which makes him unable to use his brain and think properly. Harrison was born smart, the government shouldn't be able to control his brain. They should have a right to use their intelligence if they have it. He is required to wear it all times, which means he has no freedom at all to use his intelligence the way he to wants to use it

The Lottery:

"Tessie Hutchinson was in the center of a cleared space by now, and she held her hands out desperately as the villagers moved in on her. 'It isn't fair,' she said" (Jackson 7).

Analysis:

This helps show how the government is inhumane against their citizens. She keeps saying "It isn't fair." except the government just cares about controlling their population and not how their citizens feel. The government is stoning people to death, this should stop since the citizens don't agree with this. Their family also has to participate in killing their family member. Which is very inhumane, the family has to witness their death right in front of their eyes, also they're forced to participate in it.

Conlclusion

I think the citizens would be better off if they were able to control their own lives and rules. They would be in less danger and be able to express their individuality. In the upcoming election I would love for Bernie Sanders to win! He is actually for the people, I would also love to be able to have free college, since my parents aren't rich, except I deserve a good education. As does every other American. The thing I'm mostly scared about is Donald Trump becoming president. Due to his harsh words against women and his racial sayings. He does not deserve to control this country at all!
