A Note from Administration
We were so excited to welcome students back after the winter break, and we started off with an excellent week. Students did a great job of picking up where we left off and were excited to see their friends and staff members again.
We are moving forward with a focus on a safe, supportive, and conducive learning environment. We will continue the intentional work of building strong relationships and a sense of belonging through community. This may look different at each grade level. Throughout the month and into the Spring, we will continue the development of age-appropriate lessons that will reinforce behavioral expectations, illustrate the repercussions of actions/decisions, be explicit in the importance of digital citizenship, and talk about the tenants of see-something-say-something. Our programming will include partnerships with outside agencies and have opportunities for parent/guardian informational sessions, as well. Please keep any eye out for additional information to be shared as we move forward. As always, please share any concerns with your child's classroom teacher or building administration if your child hears or sees anything that just doesn't seem right.
We can keep our building safe and welcoming working together! In addition, we have included a couple of local resources below.
Sincerely,
Jared Reardon, Asst. Principal
Joanna Gerritsen, Principal
Text-A-Tip & Safe2Help
What is Text-A-Tip
Text-A-Tip is a 24/7 anonymous text crisis hotline offering emotional support for middle school and high school youth. If you have concerns about a friend or loved one and need support getting them help.
How It Works
Your community code is LAKECO and is unique to your community. You will then simply text LAKECO (and your message) to the number 1-844-823-5323. Within seconds, you will receive an automated response, and within minutes a live mental health counselor will respond to your text.
Who Should Use Text-A-Tip
The short answer is anyone! Text-A-Tip is available for anyone in need of emotional support, at any time. While the line is intended for crisis situations, you do not need to be in crisis to use the service.
The State of Illinois is developing a school safety program called Safe2Help Illinois in an effort to raise awareness of 21st-century threats facing schoolchildren in Illinois.
About Safe2Help:
Safe2Help Illinois is a 24/7 program where students can use a free app, text/phone, website (Safe2HelpIllinois.com) and other social media platforms to report school safety issues in a confidential environment. Once vetted, the tips will immediately be shared with local school officials, mental health professionals and/or local law enforcement, depending on the nature of the tip. The program also will help local officials by connecting them with mental health resources or other appropriate resources to intervene and help students before they harm themselves or others.
NWEA Testing
From the Nurse
The State of Illinois School Health Law requires that children in Kindergarten, 2nd and 6th grades have a dental examination on file no later than May 15th of the current school year. A dental examination completed within 18 months prior to May 15th of the current school year is acceptable. If you have not done so, please turn a copy of this exam in to your school nurse. Thank you!

Teaching & Learning Department
The Family Institute at Northwestern University has created a video collection called Talking to Kids You Love. This series of 16 short videos offers approaches to anyone who interacts with children — parents, caregivers, teachers, and more. Each video depicts an adult lovingly responding to a tough parent-child encounter, moments that often lead to power struggles and leave parents wondering if they’ve said the right thing. The scenes depict adults modeling effective interactions that build emotional intelligence and promote self-esteem.
Supporting Young Readers Before (and After) They Can Read Words
Young children can read and make meaning from a book long before they can decode. Literacy educator and author Kathy Collins shares some ideas about supporting young readers at home.

Google Meet
Staff and students will be receiving training on Google meet during the month of January. As of January 31st, Antioch CCSD 34 will not be using Zoom for any quarantine students or e-learning days.
Quarantined Students
All quarantined students will have the Zoom app pushed out to their iPad once they are identified by each building nurse. Please be patient with this process, as it may take up to 24 hours for this app to get sent to the student’s iPads. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause.
