Nieman Mission, Vision and Collective Commitments

Over the summer SMSD hosted a PLC (Professional Learning Communities) Institute. This was an amazing experience offered to all SMSD teachers for free. We had a large number of Nieman staff attend the 3 day institute and we learned so much from the experience.

During our time we were reminded of the importance of having a Mission, Vision and Collective Commitments; so as part of our back to school preservice meetings we took the time to focus hone in on what we do everyday (Mission), what we strive to be (Vision), and the behaviors that we commit to hold ourselves, students and community to so that we may achieve this. See the image below for our final work.

We share this with you so that you can see the dedication we have for your child(ren) and their success in life. We hope that you see this when you are in the school, partnering with our staff, and talking with your child(ren).

Therapy Dog- Input Requested

We are in the process of working to bring a therapy dog to Nieman. We would like your feedback as part of this process. Please answer the questions around having a therapy dog come to the building to help provide comfort and a point of regulation for our students.

Research has shown a lot of positive benefits of using therapy dogs in schools. Therapy dogs help to calm students who are anxious and crying. They increase the overall morale of the building. In addition to this, research shows that they decrease blood pressure, increase dopamine and serotonin levels, assist in social skill-building, and boosting self-confidence in reading. When a child is upset, the presence of the therapy dog may help them to refocus and settle.

While there are pros there are also things to consider. We understand that dogs are not for everyone. We have already taken into account the need to consider people who have severe canine allergies. The dog is a hypo-allergenic breed, which can diminish the severity of allergies. Another concern is the fear of dogs. Many people are afraid of dogs, and bringing them into the classroom and school as a whole may be more alarming to them, rather than assisting them, it could increase their anxiety. Knowing this, students will not be forced to interact with the dog and we will make sure to ask all students before any interaction occurs.

This dog will belong to a teacher and will primarily be housed with that teacher, if not with the teacher then the dog will be in the office resting.

Please take a moment to answer the questions below and provide your input.

Thank you!

Panorama Information for Parents/Guardians:

This school year (2022-2023) the Shawnee Mission School District is once again utilizing the Panorama Social-Emotional Learning survey to assess student’s perseverance, grit, determination, school culture and student-teacher relationships. The Panorama Social-Emotional survey takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes to complete and will be administered once each semester. The first survey window is scheduled for September 19 through October 7, 2022. The Panorama Survey can be completed by students in the remote, hybrid or in-building learning environment. Parents/Guardians would have opted their student(s) in or out of the survey during the 22-23 registration process. Survey data will be reviewed at the district and classroom level to determine areas of strength, as well as areas where more instruction and/or support is needed. Once survey results are returned, parents/guardians are welcome to see and discuss the results with their students’ teachers, social workers, and counselors. Sample survey questions can be found here and here.

We encourage you to visit the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) website to learn more about how Social Emotional Learning benefits your child and their environment. All data is maintained by SMSD and will remain confidential. Please visit this site for more information about the Panorama SEL survey.

Fun Activities for Families

Eat Lunch With Your Child!

We are so excited to be able to allow visitors into the building again! One thing that is returning is the ability to eat lunch with your child! You may bring food in for them or have them get lunch from the café and then come and join you in the front entrance area. We have two circle tables set up so that you can enjoy time together. You will need to bring in your ID so that the office can scan it. Please email your child’s teacher ahead of time so that they know and can make sure your child goes to the correct spot that day. If something changes or you will be running late, please call the office that day to let them know as your child’s teacher may not see their email. We can then pass along the information.

Chili & Paint Night

Join us on September 28th from 5:30-7:30 pm for our PTA Chili & Paint Night. The PTA wants to give Nieman families one last chance to buy spirit wear and take advantage of our special, money-saving PTA membership packages, where you can order your yearbook at a discounted price and get a FREE t-shirt. We have extended the deadline to the end of September, so there are only a couple of weeks left to take advantage of these discounted membership prices, as well as new spirit wear options!

Due to the popularity of our virtual paint nights, we partnered with Nieman's new art teacher, Ms. Carter, to have a fun night out and enjoy the opportunity to get together for an in-person paint night. In addition, Ms. Carter will have a special guest helping out that evening. Our special guest is Nieman's own, Ms. Ellis, our former art teacher, who is now the Visual Arts Coordinator for the SMSD.

We will have two different paint tutorials available. Starting from 5:30-6:30, the painting tutorial will be created for the novice artist, while the more advanced artists will enjoy the tutorial from 6:30-7:30. Any student may join either session, but the suggested age group for the novice group is aimed for PreK-2nd and the advanced for 3rd-6th grades.

Join us to kick off the first Chili & Paint Night. Eat at the chili bar with fixings and grab a tile to create some beautiful art for only $5 per person. Online registration can be found at this link:

We hope to see you there!

Social Emotional Learning Video

Nieman is proud to share information on Social Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons we have been working on. In some of these rooms, we have worked on Conflict Resolution Time Machine through Conscious Discipline. This has been helpful for both staff and children on learning another way to assertively handle conflicts with each other through effective communication.

Here is a link for you to watch a video of the Founder of Conscious Discipline, Dr. Becky Bailey, modeling this:
