Message from Mrs. Richardson
Dear York Avenue Families,
The North Penn School District held the 2022 Black History Oratorical Competition on Thursday 2/24. The evening was full of incredible performances from North Penn students reciting speeches from Black figures of the past and present, live music by the North Penn Jazz Band, and a beautiful rendition of the Black National Anthem, "Lift Every Voice and Sing". Congratulations to the winners, all who performed, and everyone that submitted a video for consideration. If you missed the competition, click this link to check out this video on NPTV and see all the talented students!
Thanks for celebrating Twos Day with us! Look below for pics. This week is Read Across America Week. It's a week dedicated to motivating children to read and celebrating the joys of reading. Teachers and students will be reading and listening to stories all week related to our daily theme. Please join us in acknowledging our love of books and reading by joining in the fun. The flier is posted below.
This event was postponed due to the weather, but come join us this Friday, 3/4, for a Hot Cocoa Dance Party from 5:00-6:30 in the YA Playground. It might be a chilly evening, so bundle up and have some hot chocolate and cookies to warm you up. Home and School President, John Benedix, will DJ the event. Families are welcome to bring chairs and blankets to stay and hang out.
Also, the first H&S May Fair planning meeting took place last week. Please consider completing this Google Form the committee has created to gather volunteer interest.
Additionally, please see an important message below from our Parents in Equity representatives.

A Message From York Avenue's Parents In Equity Group
Who loves PIE? We do! The cherry, apple, and pumpkin variety, AND the idea that everyone should get a slice. That’s why PIE is the perfect acronym for our district wide Parents in Equity Group.
Right here at York Avenue and at each building across the district, there is a small group of dedicated parents and teachers working to create resources for our school. The goal is to help make York Ave an inclusive, welcoming, and equitable environment for all families, by celebrating the diversity of our school community. These resources and displays are often centered around district-wide monthly themes, such as Lunar New Year, Black History Month, Women’s History Month, or Autism Awareness.
If you have a resource that you would love to share, an idea for a display, or input on how our school community can continue to recognize and honor the diverse backgrounds of our students, please reach out to Jenn Svetlik (jennifer.svetlik@gmail.com) or Megan Briggs (mbriggsis@gmail.com) who proudly serve as our school’s Parents in Equity representatives.
We are always looking for new voices and perspectives from parents who are interested in getting more involved with bringing our district’s vision of cultural proficiency to life at our school.
Mid-February Counselor's Corner
It’s beginning to feel like we might be on the brink of spring, covid numbers continue to improve, and the 100th day of school has come and gone! While these are good signs and offer some hope and optimism, you and your children may be feeling like a lot of us do and you are TIRED-physically, mentally, and emotionally! This has been a long haul!
Below are some helpful tips from one of my go-to resources: the Mental Fills Counseling Store to help nurture your child’s mental health. I know that some of these are easier said than done but start by choosing one and working on that for a week and then adding another.
If your child is demonstrating changes in behavior or asking for help, remind them that you are there to support them and that it is a sign of strength to ask for help. Please always feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns.
Take good care.

STEM Activities for Home
A STEM activity is similar to science experiments for kids, but rather than simply involving science, the activity includes other elements that round-out the study and foster a love of exploration and discovery that children can take with them beyond school.
If you give any of these a try, please share pictures with us!
Kindergarten Registration
We are excited to announce that Kindergarten Registration for the 2022-2023 school year will begin on February 1st. All Kindergarten registrations can be completed online through the district website. Please use this link to begin the registration process. On the district website, you will also find additional information about Kindergarten. If you have any questions regarding Kindergarten registration, feel free to contact the main office.
March Lunch Menu
Please be sure to review the options with your child. They will tell their teacher their choice each morning.
Home & School Meeting News
One topic discussed was safety. The safety of the community is the most important goal during drop-off and pick-up. We all have a responsibility to see that every child is safe. In addition, we need to keep traffic moving to facilitate student arrival and dismissal in a timely way. It is imperative that the procedures below are observed.
Another topic of discussion was the need for volunteers. YA Home & School Association has many ideas for spring events. Please consider taking the lead or joining a group to help these ideas come to fruition. We appreciate any availability you may have. To get involved, please send an email to yahomeandschool@gmail.com.
Arrival and Dismissal Procedures
Arrival
All drop offs in the car line are in front of the main entrance between the orange cones. Please pull your car up to the large sign carried by our 6th grade safety.
Do not park your car or exit your car in the car line.
Keeping safety in mind, please do not go around vehicles in front of you and do not attempt to back up your vehicle.
As the space in front of you becomes available, the next set of vehicles will pull forward and drop off their child(ren).
When in the car line, please practice patience. Parents should not exit their vehicle in order to keep the car line moving. Staff members are available to assist the students with their backpacks or any other item they need to get out of the vehicle.
Dismissal
Pull up between the cones for pick up. Do not park and leave your car in the car line.
You can move forward to pull up between the cones as the cars in front of you leave.
If you park across the street or elsewhere, please exit your vehicle and wait for your child on school property.
Please cross the street at a corner to return back to your car. Do not run across the street.
Please be careful when pulling out of your parking spot and watch for other vehicles and our walkers.
