Agreements from our PD Day Meeting (repeat)
They have 5 chances to leave the room before a very small 5 min lunchtime. They also have 3 tardies before it’s an issue.
Use a classroom pass expectation:
We agreed on 5 in a trimester, per class, before lunchtime is owed.
If they refuse to show up once, it doubles. Let them know it will be after school if they skip again.
Use a strict door-shut policy.
It’s realistically a 4-minute passing if we can agree to do it this way:
8:21 - 8:24 can actually mean:
8:21, 8:22, 8:23, 8:24, 8:25 door shut (Late)
3) NO MORE ASKING TO GO. DO EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO DO IN THE TIME YOU’RE GIVEN.
Students need to be educated on what an efficient passing period is.
If it’s more efficient to drop your things off on the way, good.
If that’s a less efficient decision, then you need to use the bathroom shelves, or the seats in the hall to set down your stacks.
Pack for back-to-back classes to help be more efficient.
4) We need to be strict with passes.
If a kid was held back, they need a pass
If they clean tables after lunch, they need a pass
If they come in late you ask “Do you have a pass?”
If “no”, they can go get one, or it's tardy.
Passing Period / Passes Updates
PBIS Updates/Reminders (Repeat)
January/February focus:
Kindness, helping out and building a more positive community at KMS.
How:
Students: Introduce at assembly.
Staff: In the newsletter this week and next, and we will revisit it on the January 20 PD day.
How will we reinforce it:
At least three times a week we will have announcements that will relate to this topic and examples of things students can do along with fun videos for the kids to watch.
Student Government will make small reminder posters to be hung around the building
Amanda is also going to hang the cards the students made during one of her lessons that are full of acts of kindness that students said they would like to see at their school.
How will we monitor?
We won't, we will continue to teach and bring it to the staff. It is about building culture, not handing out tickets, and getting rewards.
What about the assembly, how will we pick kids?
The February assembly will consist of students that are nominated by their teachers who consistently show kindness to others.
PBIS Lessons?
We will provide some longer videos for the students to watch on the already designated PBIS lesson days along with an activity that promotes kindness (think cards for the nursing home residents)
Action Item:
Don't forget to send out those "Thanks for Being Awesome Postcards" that were placed in your mailboxes last Friday.
Notes and Reminders
*A reminder that Piggly Wiggly is changing ownership in February. We have to settle up our store account with the outgoing owner before we can open a new store account with the incoming owners. Therefore, January 31 is the last day to purchase on our store account until the end of February. We will send out another email when we have the go-ahead for the new account.
*Please share on the Jamboard what method you are using for the bathroom tracking system. Do you use a Clipboard? Is it posted? Let us know! If you need support or a better tracking method, check out the suggestions and connect with a colleague!
(Repeat)
*January 31- Board of Education members will be touring the building. We will be stopping in a few classrooms as well. Please let your students know ahead of time that we will have guests in the building.
*Volunteer Needed: Earlier this week I sent an email asking for a volunteer to sit on the District safety team. Please let me know if you are interested.
*If you can help out at our KMS Athletic Events please sign up on the spreadsheet
Final Thoughts
It is clear that the winter has settled in on the students. Don't discount doing brain breaks with your students. Go for a brisk walk, stretch, or put on a brain break video. All of these will help the students remain regulated and ready to learn!
I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
Julie
