GO BLAZE!
JULIAN
This is what Julian meant to Blackman Basketball. I think the mark of all great teams is their ability to fight and overcome adversity or difficult circumstances.
Julian was the ultimate example of this.
His disease, PKAN disease ( https://www.nbiadisorders.org/about-nbia/pkan )had taken away his ability to talk, eat without a tube and to walk. Despite these things, it became his mission to go to practice and spend time with our team each day. Julian had more bad days than good, and he was in excruciating pain most of these days without the ability to verbalize this pain. Mr. Strickland (former assistant principal) would walk in and he would be grimacing and his body would be locked up. Mr. Carpenter, his amazing aide, would say he was having a bad day. He would look at Julian and say “Let's not go to basketball today. Let’s stay down here and take some meds.” He immediately would shake his head NO! Mr. Carpenter would then ask “So, we're going to practice?” Julian would nod his head.
So, he would take the journey to the gym that some days took 15 minutes to go what would normally take us 2 minutes. As they approached the weight room or gym, our team would light up with excitement. They would come over and grab his hand and acknowledge them.
The team learned that you don't have to wear the uniform to be a part of a mission.
4EO became the team's expanded mission---and not one rooted simply in a uniform. Julian helped our players understand that mission in a way far greater than can be expressed in a coach’s words or actions. The players started getting out of their comfort zones to go to the CDC room and see him. They made it a point to stop and speak to him in the cafeteria, hallway or the building. They made him a part of the team and he made them a part of his family.

(Note from dorf: Julian passed away on Thursday, June 8th, 2018. Julian’s mother said this: “Thanks in advance and thank you all sooo much for everything that you all have done to remember my baby. The Blackman family has warmed my heart in ways that can't be explained.”)

SPED TIPS
*Principles of De-escalation*

What one person says or does usually affects what another person says or does. We need to say and do the
kind of things that help create the reactions that we want.
Flow with the*Flow with the Force
AGREE, LISTEN,VALIDATE FEELINGS, SHOW EMPATHY, GIVE CHOICES, PROBLEM SOLVE, BE AN ALLYYield to the direction of the force, instead of resisting it.
*Spend the Proper Amount of Time
Be ready to give as much attention to the situation as needed. Don’t over-do it and rush through a
situation that needs more attention.
*Slow Down, Think, and Use the Communication Process:
Don’t rush through, trying rush through the situation at a fast pace. Take your time, go slow and
