GRE Family Gazette
February 19, 2019
Dear GRE Families,
What a fun week! Thanks to all of our families who helped students prepare for our Valentine's Day parties this past Friday. Students had a great time celebrating with their classmates and teachers. A special thank you to our PTO for sponsoring a great Valentine's Day lunch for staff as well!
This week kicks off with Preschool and Kindergarten registration set to begin tomorrow morning. See below for details. Another exciting event will take this Friday when the Columbus Zoo visits our building with a few furry friends. Students will have the opportunity to see a few animals up close thanks to PTO funding this exciting event.
If your teacher requested a conference with you, those are being held on Thursday evening. If you aren't sure, please reach out to your child's teacher. Every student should have received a letter home with this information.
Here's to a great week full of fun, friends and learning!

A Few Important Reminders:
1. Are you looking for a way that you can make a positive impact in Big Walnut Schools? The district is in high need of substitute custodians and bus drivers. If interested, please visit the job postings at www.bwls.net/EmploymentOpportunities.aspx.
Training will be provided to all substitutes - potential drivers will receive all training necessary to meet licensing requirements for drivers. If you have any questions, please contact Ron McClure at 740-965-8967.
2. Our schools are extremely fortunate to have the support of our parent and community volunteers. While we are continually grateful for this support, we are also aware of the potential concerns that can arise when volunteers are working directly with students. One of the recent priorities established by our District Safety Committee, which is comprised of law enforcement personnel, first responders, parents, and staff, is that volunteers should have background checks completed to promote safety within our schools. Each staff member and coach in the district is required to provide initial and ongoing background checks to insure that they are deemed safe for working with our students, so it makes sense to consider a similar requirement for volunteers working with students or who are helping in the building during the school day. Click here to read more about our volunteer policy that will go into effect on March 1, 2019.
3. Kindergarten and Preschool enrollment will begins this Tuesday, February 19th thru March 15th. You can find all the information you need for this below.
Special Spotlight: Art with Mrs. Doran
Our bottle cap collection is still underway since we need LOTS to make our mural project a success! If you have any solid colored plastic caps at home, please send them in with your students!
What’s going on in art…
Kindergarten- Students have been creating heart art based on artists who use hearts as their subject! We also have been practicing our painting skills using good craftsmanship, controlling the brush and making good color choices.
1st- Students just finished their Eric Carle inspired Mr. Seahorses! We learned the process Eric Carle uses to create his painted paper collages and then followed the same steps! We painted A LOT of paper, drew, cut and glued!
2nd- Students are learning about artist Romero Britto and his art! We observed different works of arts by him and looked for similarities in each of them. Students were able to recognize his art always includes bright colors, black outlines and patterns! A bonus was including hearts, which they used as the subject of their paintings!
3rd- Students are working hard on their Blue Dog pictures inspired by artist, George Rodrigue! Make sure to ask your student what color they picked for the blue dog and why…because blue dog is NOT always blue! It has been so fun seeing what stories or experiences they came up with for their blue dogs.
4th- Students are in the beginning stages of their Ugly Doll inspired sewing project! We learned about the two artists who came up with the idea for the stuffed animal and how they went from one hand sewn doll to a million dollar business. Students have created sketches, patterns, and working on cutting out their designs! Make sure to ask about their idea and if theirs has a name yet!
