JUNE 2018
A message from our PTSA...
There have been several requests from our community for information about where one could make a donation in memory of Karen Kweit, our former treasurer and an ardent supporter of our school and PTA. Karen's family has informed us that, as someone who was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma at the age of 20, it has always been a goal of Karen's to try and help find a cure for this disease. Therefore, per the family's wishes, anyone wishing to make a contribution in memory of Karen may choose to do so by making a donation to the Lymphoma Research Foundation by:
1) Going to www.lymphoma.org and clicking on “Donate” in the upper right hand corner of the webpage. Then, on the left hand side of the webpage, choose “Honor/Memorial Gift."
OR
2) Mailing a completed donation form (below) to: Lymphoma Research Foundation, Wall Street Plaza, 88 Pine Street, Suite 2400, New York, NY 10005.

Monthly SEL Theme for the Month of June
Reflections and Transitions
Reflections allow you to transform ideas into reality. Remember that reflection is an important part of the learning process and that through deep reflection you are able to think and react in ways that impact all those with whom you come in contact.
Reflection is also a great tool and resource that allows us to transition successfully. I wish each of you an effortless transition to your well-deserved summer vacation and a successful transition to the opening of school in September.
Remember, be BRAVE enough to be kind and have the courage to care!

Classroom News!
Team 6A:
Students in Team 6A became experts in the different forms of Kinetic and Potential Energy and then shared their learning with their classmates. In math, students have learned about Measures of Center and Measures of Variation through both practice and song. We played Taylor Swifts “Mean” when referring to finding the mean of a data set and Zedd/Maren Morris’ “The Middle” when talking about medianJ In ELA, students are creating their own Weebly Web sites on topics of their choice. In Social Studies, students are working on their Silk Road projects.
Team 6B:
Team 6C:
Team 6C scientists are studying the Law of Conservation of Energy. In a STEM activity, students manipulated variables to create a working toy called a “spool racer” out of household materials. Students observed elastic potential energy transfer to kinetic energy as their toys rolled across the floor and tabletops. Students also played with common toys and household objects to find further evidence of energy transformations.
Team 6D:
Team 6E:
Team 6E met with the incoming fifth graders. All students were paired up with a buddy. The goal, help make the transition to middle school a little easier. The sixth graders were happy to meet their buddies and they are looking forward to getting to know them in September.
Team 6F:
Team 6F has been getting to know negative numbers and exploring energy transformations in our everyday lives. We have been discovering ancient Rome and expanding our knowledge of figurative language. We loved learning about comic book writing from Scott Snyder and had a blast competing as Team France at the Mini Olympics!
Team 7A:
During a unit on Solubility, students on Team 7A created Rock Candy by saturating a solution of sugar and water at close to boiling temperatures. Upon returning to room temperature, the sugar was unable to stay dissolved in the solution and started forming crystals on a suspended string. This resulted in the tasty treat that we know as Rock Candy.
Team 7B:
Students on Team 7B are studying composite solids. They have been working on a hands-on activity in which they have to determine whether they need to calculate the surface area or volume of composite solids within a real-life context.
Team 7C:
Team 7C has had an exciting May! After finishing up the state assessments at the beginning of the month, our journey in math continues as we move on to surface area and volume of three-dimensional objects. We had a blast doing around the room activities and Think Through Math on the Chromebooks. Highlight of the month was getting to see comic book writer Scott Snyder! Can’t wait to see what June has in store for us!
Team 8A:
As a culmination activity in science, the students on team 8A are creating "Selfie" projects to relate science topics explored throughout the year to their everyday lives. Students created projects on topics such as: rocks and minerals, evolution and heredity. They plan to share their projects with their classmates.
Team 8B:
Team 8C:
Regents, a trip to Quebec, the 8th grade party and graduation…June is right around the corner! May was a great month as students had an opportunity to share their genius hour projects that they worked on in Earth Science and Biology. From the science behind the Zodiac signs to self-replenishing air tanks for astronauts, our 8th graders came up with some incredible ideas and did spectacular research. The future is bright for these young scientists!

Thoughts on June and the Summer Months
As the end of the school year approaches,
I hope you’ve enjoyed the monthly nurses newsletters.
We enjoyed some fun facts, some serious facts and some thought provoking moments. I hope everyone has a wonderful summer and stays safe.
I’ll leave you with one last quote by Lin Yutang.
“I have done my best. That is about all the philosophy of living one needs”.
