Mid-Week Fulton Flier
November 11, 2020
Last Friday, November 6, 2020 marked the end of our first quarter. While we recognize the many challenges that our Fulton community has faced throughout the quarter, we also want to celebrate the patience, grace, resilience, heart, and rallying together that emerged throughout our Fulton Family during this time.
Since September 8th, parents, guardians, and caregivers have worked tirelessly alongside our teachers and staff to support our students with learning in a completely new way. Our PTA has supported students throughout the 1st quarter with various activities such as our virtual fun run and KidzArt classes. Our teachers and staff have learned new technology, and engaged students virtually in their learning through both asynchronous and synchronous learning activities. Our students have benefited from these partnerships and have exuded flexibility and strength throughout. Please take a minute and reflect on what you and your child have accomplished this past quarter! It has not been easy. I am proud of you!
Our teachers are excited to meet with you during parent/teacher conferences to share what your child has been learning and discuss goals for the 2nd quarter. Please review details below regarding parent/teacher conferences and 1st quarter grades.
Lastly, please see below for a way that you can join us as we strive to raise money so we can update our staff lounge for when staff returns to brick and mortar!
If you need anything, have any questions, or suggestions- please reach out to me, tanisha_burks@hcpss.org.
Warmly,
Dr. Burks
Wouldn't you love to share your child's artwork with family and friends? The Square 1 Art fundraiser provides you the opportunity to purchase keepsakes and gifts featuring your child's art! The best news is that every step can be completed from your own home and is projected to arrive prior to winter break.
Last year, we started our efforts towards updating our faculty lounge and we are hoping that this partnership will allow us to reach our goals and prepare a nice lounge to welcome our teachers back.
Your 4 Simple Steps:
- Your child creates art using the Art Paper. Need ideas? Check out these Art Creation instructions and video lessons.
- Take a photo of your child's art with your phone or tablet.
- Upload the art online at square1art.com/Shop/upload anytime between now and November 20th.
- You may then begin to shop for keepsakes! Order by November 20th to insure delivery in time for the holidays! The sooner you order, the sooner it will arrive.
Together, we can help support the school, and create keepsake memories of your child's art to enjoy for years!
Please save your child’s artwork. We will be reaching out at a later date, so that we can create something that allows us to compile all of our students’ creative masterpieces together for all to enjoy. If you have any questions, please contact Molly Caroland @ molly_caroland@hcpss.org

Grading Changes for Quarter 1
This has been a challenging 1st quarter of school for many of our families. Due to the negative impacts of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and transition to virtual learning, the Howard County Public School System has made some changes to 1st quarter grading that you may see reflected on your child’s report card.
Students in primary grades will earn an I (Independent) or W (With assistance) if they have engaged in synchronous instruction. Students in intermediate grades will earn an A, B or C grades if they have engaged in synchronous instruction. As a result, Canvas grades may not align with quarter 1 report card grades.
These changes are in place for 1st quarter report card grades only. Asynchronous assignments complement and support synchronous learning, please support your child with task completion and with attending support sessions as needed in the second quarter.
Grades for Subjects that will be posted on 2nd Quarter Report Cards
Additionally, if you have a child in 1st grade you will find a notation on your child's report card indicating that first grade instructional levels are not marked during Q1 virtual instruction. You will see "Reading and Math Instructional Levels" for your 1st grader in 2nd quarter.
1st Quarter Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) Progress Reports
Parents of students receiving special education services can expect to receive their child's IEP progress report no later than Friday, November 20 through email. If you have any questions about your child's progress or what to expect as we fulfill requirements for progress reporting, please contact your child's case manager.
