BELL LET'S TALK
A Guide to Teaching Respect
One of the most important aspects of any connection is showing respect. In our families, we don’t often think about respect until it’s not there. When everyone in the family is showing respect for each other, we sort of take it for granted, but if someone is not showing respect, we notice it pretty quickly.
So how do we foster respect in our families without making it feel heavy and without a lot of “because I said so’s”? The best way to learn respect is not through shaming and punishment, but by modelling our own respectful behaviours. The key is to remain calm, which isn't always easy, especially in the heat of the moment. Children thrive with clear boundaries, and understanding that respect is a two-way street can foster more respect in the family and their connections outside of the home.
Check out this week’s “Guide to Teaching Respect” from Big Life Journal on helpful tips and talking points to guide you through these challenging moments.
