September 21, 2022 - NEWSLETTER
Westwood Families,
Time to get your Pride on. Spring Lake Park Schools will be celebrating homecoming the week of September 26 and Westwood will participate in School Spirit Days:
- Monday – Pajama Day
- Tuesday – Soccer Parent vs. BBQ Parent Day
- Wednesday – 80’s
- Thursday – Tacky Tourist
- Friday – SLP Panther Pride Day
During Homecoming, the Panther Foundation is once again holding a Panther Pride Sweepstakes. Starting Monday, September 26, students, families and staff can enter daily to win great prizes for our schools and themselves. See more information in the newsletter.
Tommorrow, September 22 is Picture Day. Pictures will be held in the Den. Parent/Guardian(s) may order pictures online at mylifetouch.com and enter your student's picture day ID: EVTG4W4XG
This week at Westwood, grade 5 students used the 3D Design process to create a cardboard box challenge game. Students created arcade games using the discover, design, deliver process. Teammates took turns playing the games on Tuesday.
Staff and students on the tennis team also participated in the annual doubles for fun tennis rounds at the high school. Our middle school players invited staff members to join them for some tennis. Often, the kids were coaching the adults, having a little fun razzing of each other, and providing a lot of encouragement.
Next week, staff will be providing videos for parents with information on learning outcomes, units, grading, schedules, and Schoology. This is one way we communicate what is happening at school. The videos will be available by team to go over the four core areas. Elective and Specialist teachers will also have informational videos available. Watch for an email from your teacher(s) on where to find the video(s) by the end of the day Thursday, September 29.
Finally, mark your calendar for the next PTO meeting Monday, October 10. We’ll have a guest speaker on how to use Schoology. We often hear from parents that they aren’t sure where to look for curriculum, assignments and other materials to help them see and support their student’s learning. If that sounds like you, you won’t want to miss this meeting.
Have a great week,
Tom Larson

Update immunizations by November 1
Minnesota School Immunization Laws currently require all students enrolled in school to be immunized against diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (DTap/Td/Tdap), polio, measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), Hepatitis B, and varicella (chickenpox). One dose of the meningococcal (MCV) vaccine is due in 7th grade, and a booster dose at age 16.
The only exceptions are:
- A student has had the chickenpox virus
- Medical exemption with paperwork from your provider
- Conscientious exemption with notarized exemption form
Students whose immunizations are not up to date by Tuesday, November 1 will be excluded from school until their immunizations are current.
If you have questions about whether or not your child is due for immunizations, please contact their healthcare provider. If you are interested in access to low-income options for vaccines, please reach out to Anoka County Public Health at 763-324-4240.
Nutrition Services Form: Purchase of à la carte items
During lunch, students have the option to purchase à la carte items (second milk, extra entree, bottled water, etc). If you do not want your student to purchase à la carte items, please complete this form and email it to jswene@district16.org.

Award winning, again
For the 16th year running, Spring Lake Park Schools has received the Association of School Business Officials (ASBO) International’s Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting award. Less than 10 percent of districts in Minnesota receive this award, which was announced and presented at the September 13 school board meeting.
“We don’t take this recognition for granted. It is meaningful each year because it acknowledges our district’s commitment to solid financial stewardship,” says Superintendent Jeff Ronneberg. “I hope it instills pride and confidence in how we manage our financial resources at a time when school districts are under significant financial strain.”
