Friday at 4:00
December 11, 2020
From the Desk of Dr. Rodriguez
Well, this is the last Friday at 4:00 for the year 2020, and what a year it's been. While this year has been challenging in so many respects, it has been wonderful in so many others. We are truly blessed to be able to open our school doors to our students and continue giving them an outstanding education, while being able to do the same for our students learning from home. We have watched our students grow and flourish during an unimaginably difficult time for everyone, a time that is quite possibly even more difficult than we care to admit to ourselves. Our children have demonstrated an enormous amount of grit and resilience, always with smiles on their faces and love in their hearts. As administrators, we are beyond proud of the work our faculty and staff have done this school year to make sure our students continue to be challenged in all areas while still maintaining the loving, nurturing environment for which we are known. They have truly exceeded my expectations, and I am so grateful to work alongside each and every one of them. So in honor of our teachers, teacher aides, administrative assistants, and maintenance crew, who put their heart and soul into everything they do, this song is for you. You are not just doing a good job -- you're doing a great job.
On behalf of the Riviera Day School faculty and staff, we wish you a very happy holiday season and a prosperous, joyous, peaceful, and healthy 2021!
Sincerely,
Dr. Rodriguez

Holidays around the world, according to kindergarteners
The kindergarten classes are traveling around the world this week to learn about how other countries celebrate the holiday season! They visited a different country each day, flying on Bulldog Airlines and never forgetting their handy passports, which were stamped by the visited country's TSA. Once they arrived in each country, the students learned about that particular country's holiday tradition and, of course, learned the respective traditional dances. Once the students learned about each country's traditions, they participated in the traditions themselves with hands-on crafts.
Countries Visited & Traditions Learned:
Greece -- The people of Greece decorate ships instead of trees with holiday lights. The students decorated their own ships with colorful holiday lights.
The Netherlands -- The children of the Netherlands leave their shoes by the chimney and get a visit from Sinterklaas, who leaves them toys and treats. The students created their own pair of clog shoes with typical snacks for Sinterklaas's horses.
Russia -- Russians celebrate New Year's Day with Grandfather Frost. A common Russian toy is a nesting doll; students created their own paper nesting dolls.
Germany -- Germans celebrate the holiday season with outdoor markets. Also, the Christmas tree originated in Germany, so students constructed and decorated their own Christmas trees.
China -- In China, the biggest holiday is the Lunar New Year, and students learned the traditions of this unique holiday. Students created their own dragon for the traditional dragon dance.
