Chapter 4: Transforming Assessment
Tracking Student Progress
"The view of formative and summative assessment described previously allows for teachers and students to track progress based on proficiency scales. To illustrate, figure 4.3 [below] contains a student's progress chart for a specific proficiency scale used during a particular unit of instruction or a longer learning cycle like a grading period. As indicated in the chart, the student's first score was a 1.5, indicating that the student had partial success with 2.0 and major errors on score 3.0 content. The next score the student attained was 2.5, followed by a second score of 2.5. The final score the student received was a 3.0 This display depicts not only the student's final score of 3.0 but also the student's beginning score of 1.5. Of course, the student's growth is immediately observable--clearly the student has moved from having partial knowledge of the simple content to a final status of understanding the simple content as well as the target content (that is, a score of 3.0 on the scale). The first three scores in the display can be thought of as formative in nature; the final score can be thought of as summative in nature."
