What Are We Learning?
Writing: Authors as Mentors: Craftsmanship and Revision- We are starting a new unit in writing called "Authors as Mentors: Craftsmanship and Revision". In this unit writers will study mentor authors to learn more writing techniques. In addition to more practice with proofreading their writing focusing on spelling and conventions, writers will revise to include various craft moves to show emotion and action in their stories. We will bulk up our understanding of the writing process through planning, drafting, editing and revising in our last unit before we are second grade writers!
Reading: Meeting Characters and Learning Lessons- A Study of Story Elements- We are starting a new unit in reading where we will be working on comprehension skills that help with students' understanding of the power of story. Students will work on comprehension skills of empathy, envisioning, and prediction that that will encourage student engagement with a fiction text. This unit supports first grade readers as they track the events of a story to determine importance and retell key details in sequence. It also teaches students to pay close attention to their characters to grow ideas about how they feel and think. In addition this unit supports children as they dig deeper and pull life lessons from their stories.
Phonics: Marvelous Bloopers- We are starting a new unit in phonics called Marvelous Bloopers. In this unit, students will be working on standards to help transition them to second grade reading and writing. We will be working on "r controlled" vowel teams and compound words. We will also continue to work on fluently reading and writing high frequency words with consistency.
Math: Place Value- In this unit, we are focusing on counting to 120 by tens and ones, reading and writing numbers to 120, and representing a number of objects with a written numeral for quantities to 120. Students’ understanding of the place value system is strengthened preparing them for 2-digit addition and subtraction. The concept of tens and ones is developed, which is a key foundation of the base-10 number system.
Science: Observing the Sun, Moon & Stars- We are starting a new unit in science called "Observing the Sun, Moon and Stars". In this unit, students will learn that the primary source of light on Earth is the Sun. The Sun is the star at the center of our solar system. Students will learn that stars, including the Sun, generate their own light, while objects such as the moon reflect that light. Throughout the unit, students will document patterns as they observe the Sun, moon, and stars. The ability to recognize patterns is an important scientific skill that researchers use to develop explanations of observations in nature.
