Citizens Overrule the Government

• Citizens should be allowed to rule because of the isolation forced upon the citizens by the government and keeping them from having a mind of their own.

In “Harrison Bergeron” and “The Lottery”, both texts are similar because the people are isolated, meaning no one would be able to interfere or help them in any way. In “Harrison Bergeron”, Harrison was isolated from the world, as were the people who were handicapped because of their gifts or talents that they were brought into this world with. In “The Lottery”, the citizens were also isolated because of their tradition, they had no say on how they should or should not discontinue the tradition.

Quote:

"The original paraphernalia for the lottery had been lost long ago, and the black box now resting on the stool had been put into use even before Old Man Warner, the oldest man in town, was born,"(Jackson 1).

Analysis:

This quote supports my thesis because it explains how long these people have been isolated, and it shows that no one has tried to change tradition, and if people have, then it goes to show, they no longer "think" that.

Quote:

“Harrison Bergeron, age fourteen,' she said in a grackle squawk, 'has just escaped from jail, where he was held on suspicion of plotting to overthrow the government. He is a genius and an athlete, is under-handicapped, and should be regarded as extremely dangerous,” (Vonnegut 3).

Analysis:

This quote supports my thesis because it shows how people are isolated from the world, even worse, isolated from themselves, because they are more gifted or less talented than others. Harrison was isolated from the world because he was extremely gifted and talented. He was also isolated from the world because he tried to over throw the government. He didn't believe that people should be isolated from everyone else because they are different, or better.

Conclusion:

Communities would be better off if the citizens were to take over because we as citizens understand more than the government will ever understand. We citizens go through everything that's impossible, so we'll take into consideration everything everyone's been through. It just makes it bit more easier to live life if citizens were to rule because then we could do more things we like to do, then it would result in less violence, corruption, and there would be no harming ourselves what so ever. The world might just be more peaceful. Some points about the upcoming election that are important to me are making sure our new president wants to help everyone out, even the ones that don't have money, the ones who truly need help. The only thing that I'm concerned about is who the president is going to be. Hillary Clinton, nor Donald Trump are outstanding leaders so I'm just afraid that the government is going to all our lives into either of their hands, because right now, neither are trustworthy.
